Don't want to clutter up the other sports thread. There
are enough Canucks, Swedes and Finns to make this thread worth the while.

So. It's still two months or so until the real excitement starts but the league
looks really interesting with very even scores.

I usually prefer New York Rangers for sentimental reasons, or the one with
best betting odds ;).

I would be happy just to see the Bruins make the damn playoffs. Red Wings are tough to beat.

The Wings look good, and the Sharks are starting to ramp things up offensively. Out East, so long as Gerber keeps playing well, Ottawa looks like a beast again, and I think the Rangers and Flyers could make some noise.

I'm curious to see who ends up where at the trade deadline this year, as there's a lot of big ticket guys who are imminent free agents.

Buffalo Sabres in the next 30 years may win the Stanly/Stachue/or some kind of cup. If their lucky!![:D]

I still don't really understand Buffalo's moves in the offseason. Why match the insane offer to Vanek, when you can let him go and get a pile of picks (and picks in what is to be a REALLY good draft this year...and Buffalo tends to draft very well), then use that money to keep one of the two of Drury or Briere.

Actually, I've been boycotting the NHL since the lockout, but Ottawa Philly and Detroit are all looking tough (peeking out of the corner of my eye).

Darcy dropped the ball on Drury, Briere (and now Campbell), all of which were willing to sign long term deals for significantly less than they got. Then Edmonton comes calling on Vanek leaving them no choice but to overpay him or lose 1/4 of their season ticket base. Absolutely comical.

Alas, my New York Islanders are finding their level, and the level aint good. Paying the price for a decade of sheer incompetence by one Mike Milbury. [sm=00000018.gif] When you see this twit on NBC, remember that you are looking at the worst GM in the history of the NHL. Doubt it do you? The following players were once the property of the New York Islanders or were drafted with picks he traded away and, in most cases, were dealt for absolutely NOTHING: Roberto Luongo, Bryan McCabe, Zdeno Chara, Todd Bertuzzi, Oli Jokinen, Raffi Torres, Jason Spezza, Tim Connolly, etc., etc., etc. In addition, when the tool traded Luongo and Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha (!!!!!!!!!), he drafted another goaltender (Rick Dipietro) #1 overall and passed on either Danny Heatley or Marian Gborik.

I hate the man without reservation.

Yep, no arguments, Bossy...Milbury was a godawful GM. Do the Isles at least have a crop of kids getting ready to make an appearance? I don't mind their blueline, and DiPietro seems to be getting pretty good (that good D probably not hurting), but they look ghastly up front.

Chicago definitely has some young talent coming along. the only question for that team now is in goal.

Their system is pretty thin. Kyle Okposo is a blue-chipper, Jeff Tambellini and Blake Comeau are with the big club now but after that a lot of questions. If they managed to get Stamkos this summer, that would be O'tay. [:)]
The blueline is OK but nothing fabulous. Dipietro is the team's one true superstar and will be a quality netminder for a looooong time. The rest of their forwards are old men, cast-offs and career 3rd and 4th liners. [:(]

I say tank it this year and next, hopefully get one or both of Stamkos and/or Tavares and go from there.



Anyway, my prediction: San Jose will win it all this year.

I like Tambellini. He looks like a good, solid 2nd line forward who can do a little bit of everything.

I'd say if Sundin, Jagr or Hossa are moved, one of the places at least one is likely to end up in is San Jose. They have an embarrassment of riches to deal.

I wouldn't mind the Isles taking a stab at Patrick Marleau but I don't think we have enough to offer.

I do think Hossa could end up there, because they could have the cap space to sign him long term (especially if they were to br freed of the Marleau contract).
