Shouldn't these be very sensitive things? I would expect that an infantry unit hurling hand grenade after hand grenade into the depot should cause something to explode, or at least that some inventive infantry man would start a fire among those crates. Even tracer bullets should contain energy enough to get some kinds of ammo to explode and thus the rest as well. Had one under direct fire from an 81 mm mortar without luck. Same with a Sherman tank. Satchel charges worked nicely though ;-)

Hey Freddie, Do you think that they have TNT just sitting there in a pile with a sign saying "Please blow me up!"? The layout of an ammo dump is very important. Lots of material would be stored in dug-out, sand-bagged bunkers. Plus certain things, like blasting caps, would be stored well away from the 'real' explosives (TNT). If an ammo dump is set-up correctly, it should be very difficult to blow the whole thing up, quickly. But then again, who in a warzone follows regulations all the time? BA Evans

Been in the artillery, so i know the layout of an ammo dump.. used to visit them quite often but i also know that they are vulnerable and thus often very well hidden and camouflaged. An ammo dump so close to the front line probably contains armed artillery shells, lighter ammo etc etc and not only a big storage of non-armed explosives or whatever. I'm not saying they should blow up at the slighest hit, but they should probably be more vulnerable to fire. Also, infantry should be able to kill them quite easily. Most soldiers get at least a little training in handling explosives. Right now, ammo dumps are more like bunkers. The ammo handlers happily shoot their rifles at the enemies, quite unconcerned of that tank shooting at them. If nothing else those manning the ammo dump should be possible to kill or make them bail.

How about when ammo dump really blows up? Any suggestions? I wrote my own topic concerning effects -- what will 2-XXX(?) tons of TNT/Amatol do when ammo carriers and ammo dumps "accidentally" explode. All ammo dumps during WWII (and today) blow up quite violently, creating long-lasting fires and spreading around hundreds of un-exploded ordnance..... Currently this damage is only limited to 50 yards (where ammo dump is located) How far away its explosion should effect things? Nearby hexes? Fires? Suppression? Damage to lightly armoured vehicles? Hell on Earth? Any comments from Bill/Matrix?

I don't think that these are ammo dumps like we (in the peacetime USARMY) are used to. I think that these are more like several pallets of ammo offloaded from a truck. As opposed to the ammo truck, which is a cargo truck with ammo being hand offloaded. I think that one of these should be vunerable to anything bigger that a .45 and hell on earth when they go up. ------------------ When in doubt, go on line.

Not sure if it was this thread, or the one on ammo carriers (too lazy to reread it all :-p) I know the topic was ammo dumps resistance to fire, but in one (this or other thread,) was mentioned that they should go BOOM... I just did a test, and they DOOOOO! The thing took a few 105 hits from a Wespe, and then made 7 explosions, a big cloud o' smoke, and decimated the poor german troops around the thing, who had been placed there to test colateral damage. (not sure, since it was friendly fire, it may have been the 105s did some/all, but all seems unlikely, as the adjacent squads ranged from 0-50% casualties in that one turn! :-) Either way, seeing one go up is pretty cool. :-)

Yes when they do go boom they really go BOOOM! ;-) just wish it was more often!

Of course ammo dumps blow up. When ammo dump blows up, it destroys any unit in that same hex. What I mean is that it does not effect units beyond its own hex. I destroyed a ammo dump with Russian 12.7mm machineguns (it took awhile) - and it's destruction did not cause ANY suppression or damage to HMG-units - 50 yards away(!) - Even if it may contain explosives equal to 10-50 large aircraft bombs! And when ammo dumps blow up in real life, I really dont want to be 50 yards away from it. Give me 500 yards - and I'll be happy. Currently ammo dumps destruction is flashy looking - but without "any balls" My last post about this I guess

Ahh, guess it must've been my 105s that killed the observing grunts (actually bait to see what happened... morbid curiosity. :-) I agree completely, the dump should make a mess out of anyone who was unfortunate enough to be nearby.
