The Right Honorable J. Petho just doesn't want to ruin the excitement of the release. All I can really say is the wait will be woth it. Although J. Petho is one of the best people to work with and for if I say to much he may have me looking for bugs that are not really there [sm=terms.gif] [:D]

All i can say is that i hope this patch fixes the decade long epic problems of the dynamic games. Its been interesting to sit back and read over the past few months just how many DCG junkies there really are out there. I know in the past on many occasions people have spoken on the merits of the LCG's, but i guess people just like what they like. Needles to say i have suspended all campaigns till the 1.03 in hopes that this will do it, and also because i just couldnt take losing another game to critical errors in 43 after dozens and dozens of hard fought battles as both German and Russian. I hope i dident bore the hell out of anyone on my little rant, i just wanted to express whats on my mind as a hopeless CS addict.

P.S. I hope the patch comes soon because my 13 year old nephew got me playing WOW and if i get fragged by another 11 year old snottnose, i'm just gonna lose it.

Well I sure am glad the support is still there. I'm really enjoying playing a Rising Sun campaign and if they can patch the sim to make it even better, then great!!! [;)]

You make it sound like there are all kinds of major problems. All I see is minor tweaking being needed. The could have just said f-it and left it the way it was.

and if the game continued to crash in the Campaign mode it would have been worthless and I WOULD HAVE ASKED FOR MY MONEY BACK AS THE GAME IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY! In it's current state-it is NOT! It crashes in Campaign which is what I play. What good is it then to many players like myself? It's nothing more than a highly DEFECTIVE product at this point. There are not a few problems but many, and I have documented many as have others. The truck loading problem Jason did not know about till a few weeks ago and that will still be there in 1.03.
You don't a buy refrig that only the frig works and the freezer does not. You don't buy a car that breaks down everyday (unless your English). So quit selling me on how great Matrix is. Right now I can't play the game I bought. They didn't test it-read Jason's post to me. That's an omission of great import as regards basic business practices. They turned off a long time customer-another dumb business move.
They have one last try on this 1.03 and if it does not work at least as good as the Talonsoft vesrions, I want my money back and will get it.
Yeah, they could have said F-u-and lost a lot of customers for not only this, but Harpoon (still more fun on the table than the computer) and other games they sell. It would be a cold day in hell for me to buy another of their products at this point.

LOL...I could understand his whining if EVERYONE was having the same problems. I have played campaigns and am playing campaigns on a daily basis. Rock solid, no crashes and no problems. How many patches did Talonsoft do and they still had weird glitches. I just bought 3 more Matrix games today and ALL THREE are working perfectly. Perhaps you are having driver problems or the settings or specs on your computer are off. But don't make huge generalizations that make it sound like everyone and his brothert is having problems. [8|]

All Western Front Games you list there guy. My problems were in EF.
It's a game. You are right. It's also a defective product for the time being by the companies own admission. If the game crashes in EF, then obviously it is not working. My fun time is limited and to play into a second Campaign Corps action and have it crash-twice was not worth the money or time.
Glad your WF is working well. By all means, buy their products and enjoy them. My experience has been negative. You want to play test for them-go right ahead. Have been enjoying the older version-WITHOUT ANY GLITCHES-ROCK SOLID.
In my string and here-neither Chris or you have made positive suggestions. Whining-no: sending a message to the forum moderator that not all customers are satisfied. You seem to say nothing ever but my ^&*% is working and that is rubbing salt in the wound, not being a help.
I gave my system specs-no one said they are not capable. NO ONE SAID ^&*%! I even upgraded the laptop which was not needed to play the game correctly. I pointed out many flaws and my string was listed as a major victory which many have visited-a tad more than your strings, eh?

John Tiller's Campaign series covers West, East and Rising Sun. Haven't had any problems in ANY of them. East Front plays just as well as West and RS. Now back when Talonsoft owned it, I had a problem with BOTH East and West Front. After about 3-4 battles I would get a failure to run. I e-mailed Talonsoft and their "fix" was to go into my saved campaign and DELETE three of four campaign files. This would "skip" the correct following battle and move to the next one. It worked...as far as making the game run again. But this kept happening REPEATEDLY throughout a campaign. Hardly what I would call a "fix". This bug does NOT happen in the current version of the game. And I'm grateful for that.

BTW....I just dumped 101st Airborne from my comp. What a POS game. I got it for free from a Torrent download. But I can sure see why the game flopped as a retail item. They (Sharpnel Games) have another version of it out caled 82nd Airborne. If it's the same method of operation, I predict it will flop quickly too.

I have played TWO PAGES of Campaign battles without a crash in the older version-ever. This would be the 2001 release (the oldest I gave away). I am interested in many of the posts that explain problems with the older version. YOUR LAST POST HELPS! Thank you. If I run into that (which I never did), I now have some useful insight. Chris, as always, will continue to take shots while adding nothing constructive. I'm glad I am better entertainment for him than American Idol. He has that going for him, though he still needs a girl, pet, etc.
I am hoping 1.03 is the ticket-but there is always something in any game. Yes, there will be more problems. For you, it sounds like you have a highly POSITIVE experience with the new game. When others asked me to provide system specs vis a vis the new game, I gave them yet not even the moderator made comment. So it's not the systems. I described in detail the loading proceedures, unloading, etc. and only after some 75 posts did Jason even mention 1.02b! Not listed under the patches at that time, so how would I know it existed? Perhaps some of my frustration would have been reduced had I known about it. Perhaps not.
On my posts, you will see that I am not the only one to have crashes in the new version in Campaign Mode. From what I read-there are MANY players who get stuck in the never-ending-cavalry freeze! Game crashes at that point. Please review the many other players who mention this. I highly doubt you have run into this exact problem or your game would have crashed. It's a needed fix in the 1.03, again, per Jason. Not me.

An update on the 1.03 UPDATE.

The final build will be sent out to the testers on Sunday.

Two weeks will be given to do one last bug hunt and system check.

Any outstanding issues will be corrected and the whole works will be sent to Matrix for them to compile and release the 1.03 UPDATE.

Tim: First let me apologize. I try NOT to call people names on forums, and that was a BIG mistake on my part. I never ran into a cavalry bug, probably because I mainly play with armored formations. When Talonsoft was still running the show, I had EVERY upgrade and patch they made. I think, and I'm just guessing from memory, that their last version was 1.08, maybe 1.10. I still had that above-mentioned problem even with Talonsoft's newest version. I agree that the 1.02b patch should have been listed as available. But it was a temp patch that only affected a small part of the game. Still...it should have been in the downloads section.

Now before you think all is wonderful in "Dep's warland" [:D], I DO still have a problem with Steel Panthers: World At War. I save after EVERY move in that game because it STILL gets CDT, even after all these many years. I've tried shutting down EVERYTHING running in the background and it still does it. The save-after-every-turn thing has just become part of the game for me. I bought Shrapnel Games version called SPWW2 too. I hardly ever play it. Their conversion is rock-solid reliable and NEVER gets CDT, but they have made some changes that just make the game less enjoyable for me.

Anyway, I apologize again for calling you whiner. If you are having problems, you certainly have a right to voice them. BTW...can you post your system specs? Maybe there is something lacking there or you need driver updates?

Outstanding. Thank you very much. As mentioned, we reinstalled the game completely in a version of XP that neither had the new or old versions on it previously and applied Patch 1.02 & 1.02b. Did I miss any? We will not test the game until the 1.03 is applied and I will advise. It sits waiting. Hopefully the folks at Matrix will work with alacrity (beyond your control I'm sure).
The older version appears to be operating normally which will hold me over. I do look forward to what could be another 8 years of fun without bugging anyone. One classic lesson about game design from the 70's was playability. Balancing complexity with playability is the rub, no? Did the Command and Control aspect of Tillers' game come from Command Decision (1970's) originally? The CAC seems similar (one of the few games a large action could be fun in one afternoon and we did it on the table top).
ONE NOTE: I hope the manual will go into greater detail on all aspects of Engineering units. Perhaps a Boot Camp V in the tutorial scenarios along with info on the operating train (?), and some newer aspects in future patches at least? I did not do boot camp scenarios in the first attempts at JTCS, and though the manual was incomplete in some respects I should have run through these as a matter of course instead of referring to the Unit Handbook and Manual alone. I did not refer to the Unit Handbook with Late War German Infantry units, which again could possibly have explained the more than one hex range against armor of the unit mentioned to you. Another mistake. In defense of my initial experiments, by playing Corps level I was perhaps able to discover more problems quicker than some other players. I think the rat-tat-tat of the questions-4 in the first email kinda proves my point, but which you answered to the best of your ability at the time.
I am impressed at how many people do use this forum, and perhaps I'm just missing a simple rule of business myself. If you can cut costs on a new version of a reasonably popular game but one perhaps not in the most profitable category, maybe it's an efficient cost saver to have the players playtest, that allows the upgrade to happen in the first place. I hope things work out. It's just a kinda of a pain for old hands...that love the game along.

Dep, in regards to SPWAW, I too was getting a CTD after a few minutes play, I quit playing it for a few years which sucked, since I helped to develope it!! However, I got the notion, about a month or so ago, to play it again, but decided this time to put my ZoneAlarm (firewall) into game mode, and have not had one crash since??!!!! Do you have this firewall proggy, or perhaps maybe try to shut yours off also, SPWAW is a resource hog, and that seemed to be the ticket!

Tim, I'm not doubting your experience with EF2 not crashing (Talonsoft Version), however, as I stated before, I ALWAYS from day one had a problem with the DCG's in EF2 crashing, sooner or later in the campaign, usually around 1943, but not always. I ALWAYS played with an armored formation, and this problem HAS been fixed now in 1.03!! Just wanted to point out that while your having problems with this version, and others aren't, I had nothing but problems with the original, and you don't!! The problem lies in formations having wrong force ID numbers and such, this is corrected.

My system Specs were posted under my string-close to the end (as requested by someone else-perhaps you?). The update to the laptop was needed due to a hardware problem, nothing wrong with the old game. The specs listed include the pre-hardware replacement in the laptop which I can furnish at a later date. As listed there, the games ran fine on both systems. They ran fine on 98 and I think 95 if I'm not wrong (might have been the first Talonsoft in 95)-I have both still (95 and 98-for older games) and can certainly load them again.
One reason the older versions were so much fun for me personally was the fact I never once had to do anything to them to get them to work. Like my problems with the new game, many here claim nothing but problems with the older versions. If I could explain any of that-I'd be playing instead of writing. My goal is to get back to that point! No writing-just playing.
I'm playing two late war campaign games (corps level) in EFIIGold at the same time and poping in and out to see if I can trigger any kind of problem in the older versions mentioned by others. I intend to go back to WFII and experiment also. There have been constructive posts on this site about the older games which ARE valuable to me.
No need for any apologies. I will try the new version without bias when the 1.03 is ready and REALLY-I'd like that to be the one I play in future.

Mike: I am a BIG fan of SP:WAW!!! I use the normal Windows Firewall. I will disable that and see if it makes any difference. But to be honest, I have gotten so used to hitting the save buttons after every turn, that it has become almost "automatic for me and just a part of the game. [:)]

On Tiller's campaign series games...I never let myself be given higher than battalion command. I am not crazy about moving around the huge number of support vehicles. Normally, on setup before a battle, I move all transport to the bottom of the map and remove it. To me, they are just targets for the enemy to boost his victory points with. One of my requests for future patching is the option to select or remove this transport before starting a turn. Heck, I'd like to be able to select specific unit types like in SP:WAW!!! [:D]

I gave your problem with transport some thought and have some suggestions. Trucks are only 1VP. Even in Battalion level play, try using trucks as scouts! Better to discover an enemy emplacement with a few 'useless trucks', than a combat unit-all of which are more VP's and deplete your combat power. If it's an antitank or artillery position-then hit it with area artillery fire if you lose direct line of sight and continue the same process-moving forward with 'truck scouts'.
Also, 'demonstrating' can be useful. If attacking, tie down the enemy by finding a point away from your main point of attack where there is some cover (forest-town: anything that hides an area you can move vehicles hidden from view). Put some empty trucks and a few artillery tractors there and run them back and forth-still out of view. It ties the forces there down, expecting attack and sometimes draws the enemy from your actual main thrust area.

Trucks will be worth 3VP with the 1.03 UPDATE.

Using trucks for scouts is fine when playing HAL, but will be highly scrutinized if one plays against a human opponent.

Certainly a tactic I would not use in either case.

I like the idea of increasing the VP value of trucks.  In that manner, the game itself discourages using trucks as cannon fodder to use up enemy op fire and discourages using trucks as spotters.

Deputy seems to have little use for it???? Still, I have discovered both an 88 and a Tiger VIb position using this tactic yesterday-better than losing the leading elements of my armor, eh? A few Zil trucks instead? The artillery eleminated the 88, but obviously the Tiger was still there. At least I knew where he was!

The demonstration suggestion works fine when playing against newbies, but will usually be ignored by a veteran.

The tactic only works if your opponent is playing with sounds on, of course.
