Nukester -> How To Do Expansion ? (2/23/2008 3:00:05 AM)

One reason why I usually start my historical leagues in the early part of the 1900's is because there is a long wait until having to deal with expansion (and that I like to get a full history of the league stats). Most of the time (ok really never) have I gotten far enough to have to deal with expansion. This time I decided to start in 1962 and see where I can take the Mets.

After starting the league, I thought about it, and thought it would be cool to start in 1961 and do my own expansion in 1962. I see expansion is possible, but I also know it doesnt happen automatically. Ive done searches on the forums and I havent been able to find anything on how to actually do an expansion. Is there a thread or guide somewhere that I moght have missed ? Also, if after doing the expansion, how do I go about drafting players for the new teams ?

Any help would be appreciated !

An absolutely historical expansion would be great, but it is not (yet) supported by the game. Now, historical relocations can be done, and Crash Davis wrote a utility to allow doing this without screwing up the Retrosheet schedules. This is all we have so far. This allows a continuous 16-team historical format (with correct schedules) to be followed from 1903 to 1960.

So I cant sim the 1961 season and add 2 team and have a draft of some type in 1962 ?

Yes you can. Just be careful when the enpansion screen comes up. Make sure the two teams are in the correct league. If not you will have to move them. Also make sure you rename the teams while in the expansion screen or you will need to get Crash's program. You may want to get the program any way just to make sure your teams are named correctly. Then you will go into the expansion draft. The players drafted will not be the same as who was really drafted by the real teams, even with team anfinity turned on.
Good luck,
Don

Ill probably just sim the '61 season and play around with it. Im not sure yet if I can do what I want. If not, Ill just go with the '62 import and go from there

Thanks a bunch

My standard suggestion to all (if you're not managing) is to set up your association as Multiplayer, with all teams under human control.

It will take you awhile to "recover" from expansion, but you can put the players back where they belong with this setup.

The program will ask you to protect 25 players. The rest will become part of the expansion draft. After the draft, you'll have dozens of players end up on the wrong teams. Just let it happen, then go to those players' cards, under "Edit Player" and put them where they belong. It's easy if you have a print-out or handwritten copy of the rosters to look at. You can print them out at either www.retrosheet.org or www.baseball-reference.com.

If you want to get as historically accurate as possible, look through the boxscores at retrosheet. Go to each team and look at the early-season boxscores. It will only take you a few boxscores to determine what the 25-man roster should be.

Ok, yeah that didnt really work out like I wanted it too. Expansion worked with no problem, but the expansion draft was a little disappointing. Good players like Joe Morgan, Rico Petrocelli, Jose Cardinal, and Don Mossi were taken in the draft. I actually thought the new teams got too many good young players. Could just be my opinion though.
