Long time gamer, first time Matrix forums poster!

I've been playing since the good ol' days of Avalon Hill and later, S&T mags/games in the mail. Sadly, due to my career and family, I've been away from wargames for some time now, but am making an effort to get back into it.

I remember, with fondness, the games by SSI and those wonderful creations by Gary Grigsby. What I am looking for at the moment is the best successor to those old eastern front games like War in Russia. I'd love to have turn-based, division/corps level action on the eastern front, full WWII campaign.

What's the best bet out there?

My recommendations are:

1) Battles in Italy (great scenarios for full Ost Front, Kharhov 43, Kalach 42, and Opn Typhoon).

2) Opn Art of War

3) Korsun Pocket/Across the Dnper (great games... also has scenarios for Kursk 43 and Kalach 42 but not nearly good as Battles in Italy as a game engine).

Art of War III and find a copy of "Second Front" by SSI if you can. There's a free version of GG old War in Russia around out there somewhere as well. Combat Missions Barbarossa is pretty good if you want some fun tactical level battles of the Eastern Front. There's several HPS titles that cover the Eastern Front as well. The Panzer Command series is up and coming and I would suggest waiting for the soon to be released Kharkov version of it since it's gonna have a random battlle generator as well as pre-defined scenarios.

Operational Art of War again. [:)] I'd also seen that somewhere else during some 'googling'. I'll look 'em up. Thank you.

Art of war. [:D] Will definately take a look. I did set-up WiR, but oh man, the graphics! And DODBox! And trying to remember the rules! I have some fond memories of that game. I'd bring my Mac over to my brother's apartment and he'd play some games on that while I played WiR on his Apple IIc (e?).

I'll so a search for Second Front.

Advanced Tactics is a faster paced, more fun (in my opinion) game in the style of TOAW. TOAW is fine, but AT is better!

AT is a newcomer and a great game. Op. Art is a classic and a great game. I'd pick both if you have the $ to spend [:)]

TAOW is on a larger scale, isn't it? I want to re-create the Russian front, but I don't want to mired into like those old SPI/GDW games with 6,000 counters shifting about on the screen!

I could do the money, just not the time! And a friend finished 'The Witcher' and let me borrow it. Oh, for more time! Though if I add a good wargame to my laptop, I could play that on my TDYs (I don't do the bar scene much anymore).

They all look interesting, and two or three fit pretty close to what I'm thinking. I'll need to win PowerBall/MegaMillions so I can retire and play them all. [;)]

For that Advanced Tactics is the better choice. Get TOAW 3 as well, though... you need to try 'Fire in the East' at least once - even if does have thousands of counters!

Yes for those with time constraints "Advanced Tactics" should be your choice. Nowhere near as many units or detail and the outcome is about the same whether its 50 units or 6000 units. ;)

[:@] Evil tempter! I LOVED those multi-thousand unit games! My brother and I would stay up all night playing the one for D-Day (longest Day?) by SPI, I believe. His German turn would take 15-30 minutes. Then I'd spend 90 as the Allies waded ashore. [:D]

Nothing beats TOAW3 and that's that :). The variety of scenarios is staggering.
Some of the best attempts at Vietnam war were made for it for instance and the definite Korean war scenario. Nevermind all the superb WW2 and WW3 scenarios. It never gets old, nor does it leave the hard drive.

Though I'd rather start out with Trey Marshalls excellent WW3 scenarios rather than FiTE but that's me.

Another endorsement for TAOW! Very good. I just need to find the time to mentally calculate the pros and cons. Works busy right now and I don't have the desire or commitment this week. Possibly the weekend...

LOLOLOL every other penny helps though. ;) Need to hurry before they sell out to EA though. With all the games they put out last year and that great PROFIT they made you know EA is standing on their doorsteps and wining and dining them this year. ;) <snicker>
