gaffer -> ME 110 Rear Gunner (3/2/2008 12:45:22 AM)

I've just picked up this game and am having a blast.

Does the rear gunner in the ME 110 atually do anything? Is there anyway I can determine how much ammo he has?

Back 20 yrs ago I was King of the sky in a similar game in my ME 110 by banking and having my rear gunner take out the Spits in circling encounters. Not particulaly historically actuate, but I was hoping to use a similar manouver to get them off my tail in this game for a bit.

It's pretty much just two infantry machine guns in tandem. So the chance of actually damaging another plane let alone downing it are pretty low in a simulation compared to a game. I bet the game was either the old Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe with all it's addons or the BOB game from the same people who did battleshawks? 1942.

I do not know alot about the 110 rear gunner as I have not worked on it code. The rear gunner is AI only. He does actually hit a target (or he has hit me in the engine many times whick got me killed) but his accuracy is low as it was historicly.

No you can not check his ammo but I have never know one to run out and they could reload (I am fairly sure) historicly.

We have plans and it is on our todo list to make the JU87 and ME110 gunner positions manable by the player like the bomber gunners.

Be sure to update to 2.07 at the Shockwave forum. It has many enhancements, new features, and fixes. Get it here:

The game is a remake of Rowan's Battle of Britain (Rowan was the developer) and it was published by Empire in 2000. We the BDG (Bob Development Group) who got the source code and worked on it for years (up to version 99) call it BOBI.

Thanks buddye. As long as he's doing something back there while I'm flying the 110. The game makes it tough, as it should be historically.

The old game I was thinking of was DOS based, back in '88 or '89 with new fangled VGA graphics running on an XT!!!!!!. It wasn't SWOTLF, but essentially the exact same overall stratigic and tactical concepts, inlcuding flyable planes, as BOBII.

gotta admit, BOBII is quite an improvement.

Thanks but I have all of Rowan's BOB incarnations. I was referring to what game he played 20 years ago. Now get to work on Mig Alley II another flawed gem.

I was talking about the historical ability of the rear gunner to take down a plane. Unless the other pilot sits right in the rear gunners sights for more than a few seconds, with the plane movement and lack of a good field of fire for the rear gunner. The chance of even damaging the other plane is small especially with the small caliber bullets. BOB II is so much closer to a sim than other combat flying games that I assumed that the chance of such a thing occuring would be the same as in real life, or close to it.

That sounds like 'Their Finest Hour' by Lucas Arts. Lost a lot of hours to that game back then [;)]

That's the one I was trying to remember. Thanks.

Thank you, that was it. A lot of fun at the time, it's a shame I don't have the same kind of time to play.........

In any event, for BOBII, I have learned not to count on the rear gunner for anything.
