Saso -> Strategy Guadalcanal Scenario (3/8/2008 7:40:01 PM)

Ok, I'll start the Guadalcanal scenario and I'd like to play both side, therefore I need some hints for Allied/Japan strategies.

I never played this scenario and I just looked both deployments:

For the Japanese is possible to keep Tulagi e Lunga and to take Milne Bay e Port Moresby?

For the Allied to attack Rabaul directly is folish?

For the allies to directly attack Rabaul without gaining control of either the Solomons (Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Bouganville) or Milne Bay is decidedly foolish. The Japanese have a substantial number of ship killing Betty torpedo bombers based at Rabaul, and if they control the perimeter bases mentioned above they will have plenty of warning so as to be able to launch multiple strikes on approaching allied fleets.

At this point in the war, attacking Rabaul as the allies is suicide. Allied strategy hinges on consolidation of forces, reinforcement of PM first, then invasion and development of GC. As Japanese, sucessful invasion of PM.

Ok, the base is too strong.
So, is necessary to take the neighbouring base for a concetrate attack from more airfield?

Therefore, the japanese tactic is to make a counterattack where the situation degenerate?

Also, a CV battle is possible for the Japan or is better avoid it?

Sorry but I have a plenty of doubts.

I think that is not achievable an invasion by land, correct?

I don't know the scenario itself, but i know the map (AB's, right?)
Going via-land is a suicide! Your units will take forever to march that damned trail and when they'll arrive they'll simply be too weak to do anything.
An invasion by sea is doable...at least in the grand campaign...and not even that difficult if you have the KB available.
However, guess that in that scenario the KB isn't at full strenght, so i bet a CV engagement will something the allies should look for

Ok, thanks

Yes, after 14 days arrive 2 CV (Shokaku e Zuikaku) and 1 CVL (Ryujo), while the Allied begin with 3 CV (Saratoga, Enterprise, Wasp).

Another weakness for Japanese player is that the Allied LCUs are more strong (several division).

Can I evacuate the land units allocate in Lunga and Tulagi with SS? (if the base are lost)
I know that it is possible but I don't know if it is considered gamey...

bradfordkay -> RE: Strategy Guadalcanal Scenario (3/11/2008 6:55:44 PM)

You can withdraw troops via submarine but it takes a long time. Since the Japanese used destroyers and barges to do the same job IRL, I don't see a "gamey" aspect to using subs to rescue isolated troops, especially if you keep running subs in there as long as you have troops waiting to be rescued.

What most players consider "gamey" is to withdraw just a couple of squads from a unit and then using those few squads as the core around which the unit is rebuilt while allowing the rest of the unit to die behind enemy lines.

Yes, I have specified if the base is lost.

I've understood, thanks.
