Dave Turner and I made the trip to Ft. Knox yesterday for the Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise and it was VERY impressive. It's free to the public and will be held again on the 16th and 30th of July. Just show up at 9:00 AM Eastern Time and get a ticket. They are limited so try to be there early. We saw M1A2's, M3A2 Bradleys, M270 MLRS's, AH-64 Apaches, M109A6's and much more put through their paces. There's a firepower demonstration first and then a Troop of the 1/16th Cavalry put on a Scenario against an attacking Bn of tanks and BMP's. All the weapon fire is impressive and most of it occurs about 25 meters to your front firing at a ridge about 1500 meters out. The M109A6 was a show in itself, I'd never considered that I could see the shell arcing through the air and 155HE is VERY impressive! The "mad minute" at the end is, by itself, worth the trip. Then it's over to the Patton Museum (on the post) for WWII tanks up to T-72's and the XM1.

Goofy, besides the fire-power demo, did they also have static displays of other military vehicles (trucks, engineering equip etc.)? Any other info would be of help. Thanks Semper Fi Randy

Back in 1961 when I was 3 I remember going with my dad (who was assigned to Fort Knox at the time) to sit in some grandstands and watch tanks run back and forth in a large clear area. I guess this is what I remember seeing though it would have been tanks that now are museum pieces that we watched. thanks, John.

For everyone's info...most major Army bases put on demo's like that from time to time, plus they usually have some very nice museums. Contact the Public Affairs Office (PAO)on the base and they can fill you in on any upcoming events like that. Fort Bragg, NC; Ft Campbell, KY; Ft Knox, KY; Ft Benning, GA; Ft Hood, TX; Ft Carson, CO; Ft Stewart, GA; and Ft Lewis, WA are most of the major bases. Ft Hood and Ft Irwin, CA have the best overall museums IMO, but the one at Bragg and Knox are very good too. The very best museum for old vehicles though is at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland. They even have a Tiger and a Panther among their collection which is probably the most complete set of WWII armored vehicles anywhere's in the world today. Sabre21

To Sabre21: Not to be unfair to you but do you know, by any chance, The Tank Museum - Bovington UK? Have a look at http://www.tankmuseum.co.uk you will be surprised by WWI tanks still walking around, not to speak about the next Tiger beeing quite full restored and T34 full operational. Bye

The British Tank Museum looks like a neat place. Too bad it's so far from my home. I'm lucky though, I live a few miles from Aberdeen. The stuff there is very impressive. Here is a link to Aberdeen Proving Grounds site. I think it has more variety of items, lots of artillery. This is the main artillery and weapons testing ground for the Army so that is why there is more than tanks there. Unfortunately they also have a large supply of mustard gas, the disposal of which is causing lot of problems. http://www.ordmusfound.org/

Hi Mai Tai Very nice site. I guess I will have to re-phrase my comments to say Aberdeen has the most complete armor set in the US...hehe. I have been to a lot of museums..even in Europe, but never been to that one in England. It's on my list of places to see now when I get over there next. I bet the Russians probably have a pretty good collection somewheres too. I have heard the War Museum in Moscow is very good. The down side to aberdeen is that they haven't maintained them very well. Hopefully that will change. Sabre21
