Custer1961 -> Playing a Wargame with real consequences (3/15/2008 4:52:59 AM)

Wargamers often complain about the conservative AI and about the ahistorical high losses. IMHO, if you look at the way wargames are played, the player is insanely aggressive against the AI and other players. I think this happens because the player suffers no “real life” consequences from risky behavior. In real life, I think players would be no where near as aggressive. Maybe someone should come out with a wargame that immediately removes itself from the hard drive of the losing player. The losing player would then have to buy a brand new wargame.

Would such a game lead to a reduction of risk and as a result produce more historical losses? Would such a game lead to the conservative AI being praised for its careful consideration of consequences? Or would we have to be sitting on an electric chair to make us think and act like a real general fighting a real battle?

I find it rather amusing that someone who has averaged 25 posts a day for the last three years would bring that up...[;)]

I remember back when I tried getting into first-person shooter online games, I'd always play similarly to paintballing with my buddies when I was younger- hunker down, try to not be seen, try to shoot others without being seen, and treat it similarly to a paintball match (not going to say "real war" since that not only sounds stupid, but I also haven't been in one, nor do I ever want to).  Needless to say, some idiot, usually having some ridiculous name like "zomghalorulzipwnall!!!" would wind up bunny-hopping his way across the battlefield, spraying ammo everywhere, and wind up killing me and half of his own squad-mates, then respawning and doing the same thing over and over, thus ending my desire to ever play an online shooter again until I found Red Orchestra.

At this time, I thought it would be great to package in "Death Detectors" with every online game.  These would function as such: attach innocent looking USB port to PC.  Attach small EMG-looking pads to testicles of player.  In the event of death in game, get ready for strong, police-tazer like electrical shock!  If the player refuses to attach "Death Detectors", do not allow them into online play".  "If player attempts to remove Death Detectors during play, promptly reformat the player's entire hard drive".  Online games would have been an adrenaline rush that no other form of recreation could match, and the players such as those above would get the electrically-induced vegeance that everyone else trying to enjoy the game wanted them to receive, and hopefully wouldn't have been able to reproduce either.
