c4n -> Vista: game works fine but MP doesn't detect my IP (3/23/2008 5:45:04 PM)

Hi,

I have a kind of strange issue here. I'm running Vista (SP1) and the game works fine in the Win 98/Me compatibility mode, no problems here.

My problem is that when I try to run MultiPlayer the game doesn't detect my IP address (it's not shown there) and the "Internet TCP/IP" button is disabled (see attached file).

It's not a firewall issue because a) I disabled the software one and b) it works fine if I run the game in XP insted of Vista

The thing is if I reboot the PC in Safe mode with Networking it works fine and the IP is detected (but I can't play like that as there is no way to enable sound in safe mode)! So I guessed some application/service is causing problems, so I rebooted in diagnostic mode and disabled all startup applications and every service that isn't needed (all these are loaded in the safe mode as well) and no luck.

Anyone has any ideas?

Try running the exe as Administrator.. that should get your internet running.

Already did that, no luck. Some app/service is obviously blocking COI from detecting internet connection but I can't figure out which. Like said tried to disable everything I could think of.

Have you forwarded the ports on your router?

the ports 47624, and the range 2300-2400 must be open for both inbound and outbound TCP and UDP traffic.

I tried that, I also tried setting my PC on a DMZ zone (all ports open) and nothing helps. I am pretty sure it's not a firewall issue as I completely disabled the software one (Windows firewall) and if I connect an XP computer to the same router it works fine there.

It must be something else, but I can't figure it out. I know I did play multiplayer a few months ago on the same PC (Vista) and it worked fine then. The only big change the PC had had since than is that Vista Service Pack 1 was installed, not sure if this is causing problems.

I'll try it on a different router tomorrow just to be sure.

Oh, actually I'm 100% sure it's not a firewall issue because it works fine if I reboot in safe mode. Must be some local service blocking it.
