A lingering data base bug that should be corrected in Admiral's Edition is that some U. S. CVEs have 54 plane squadrons. Since CVEs cary two sqadrons that puts 108 planes on a CVE. It would be good if the data base for Admiral's addition corrected that.

This isn't a bug. Those CVE's carry replacement aircraft. Put them in a replenishment TF and they will replace losses the big CVs suffer.

Thanks, but it seems odd that they can carry on air combat operations.

Javakamp -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (3/28/2008 2:38:34 AM)

They really can't carry out combat operations, so don't put them into TFs slated for combat. All they can do is launch replacement aircraft.

Terminus -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (3/28/2008 2:38:50 AM)

They can't. Not more than once, from land bases, and they suck at it, with their very low experience. However, as Rainer says, a full CVR air group of 108 aircraft won't launch any combat mission whatsoever from a deck.

It's not a bug and it'll stay as is.

Rainer -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (3/28/2008 2:40:57 AM)

Let me add to flipperwasirish's answer that those replenishment airgroups don't fly. Therefore those replenishment CVEs need to be protected.
The replenishment airgroups also should not be moved from the CVEs because the program apparently cannot handle this.
The replacement process is automated, meaning that carriers in need of replacement aircraft simply have to be in flying reach of the replenishment CVEs.

There are several threads in the forum about this. You may want to search for replenishment, replacement and CVE (although I understand many people are not happy with the search engine. But that's a different story).

Mobeer -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (3/28/2008 3:07:37 AM)

There do seem to be some problems with airgroups:

Chitose and Chiyoda receive airgroups when converted to light carriers, but these expand far enough beyond 30 capacity that the carriers become overloaded and then cannot launch aircraft. This exposes the AI failing to understand that the carriers are overloaded - it should do something about this (like offloading fragments), but instead uses them operationally.

Updated totals for US carriers:

Also a couple of the US escort carriers arrive in about January 44 and then gain aircraft (in non-CVR groups) to be overloaded, in one case beyond 10%.

The affected units are:
CVE Natomma Bay - capacity 27
Carries VCF63 - 18 fighters and VCT63 - 12 torpedo bombers = 30 total = overload > 10%
CVE Chenango - capacity 31
Carries VF35 - 25 fighters and VT35 - 9 torpedo bombers = 34 total = overload acceptable
CVE Suwanee - capacity 31
Carries VF60 - 18 fighters and VT60 - 12 torpedo bombers = 30 total = overload acceptable

I'm playing the full campaign, latest addition. I don't see the CVEs with 108 planes doing any good. I've had them in replenishment TFs and had those with Air Combat TFs which have lost a/c, but while the ships refuel from the AOs, they don't seem to take a/c from the CVEs. I'm in early '44. When is the replen from CVEs supposed to begin?

Gem35 -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/14/2008 5:43:55 AM)

replenishment tf is what they were intended for, if they don;t work then you are doing something wrong.

marky -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/14/2008 7:02:31 AM)

how many of these CVEs get this?

are the CVEs useable for close air support and ASW work after doing sumthing to their airgroups?

what has to be done to make them so?

Played A LOT of PBEM turns but I have yet to figure out also how the CVEs with VR groups work. Had my CVEs in replenishment TFs all the time but were never able to draw any aircraft from them, so I must doing something wrong also. I know that other people are using them, but still I´m too dumb to use them. Have them in a replenishment TF and in range of my CVs, but never I see the option to draw fighters or divebombers. [&:]

Is there a special trick to do that?

Nomad -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/14/2008 1:42:37 PM)

You do have to have your air groups on the CV set to accept replacements for them to draw replacement aircraft.

John Lansford -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/14/2008 4:33:18 PM)

When I first got those replenishment CVE's, I did move some of their 54 plane squadrons onto bases.  CV's still draw from them to replace damaged planes; I've got one DB squadron at 0 planes now, a TB squadron with just 2 planes left, and a Wildcat squadron with about half gone.

However, I can't get rid of the 0 plane squadron; can't withdraw or disband it.  Got it set to "no replacements" to keep it from draining the Dauntless pool down uselessly.

John, on the "0" squadrons, have you tried putting another squadron there of the same type plane, and then disbanding the "0" squadron?

doc smith -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/18/2008 11:57:40 AM)

Well, I don't think I'm doing it wrong, mate. I move one of the CVEs with 108 a/c on it into a Replenishment TF, along with an AO or two, and several escorts.

When I send out an air combat TF, I have the Repl slaved to follow it. I try to keep it maybe 3 hexes "back". I also have a CVE TF running parallel to the Repl TF; it has CVEs which have, for example, 21 F6Fs an 9 TBFs. The air combat TF loses planes, but no replacements are drawn from the Repl TF. If I co-locate the A/C TF with the Repl TF, then do a "Repl at sea", I get fuel but no new a/c.

So what am I doing wrong? I can't get replacements when the Repl TF is 3 hexes back, nor when it is co-located with the A/C TF.

I'd appreciate any guidance on this. "The world wonders"

saj42 -> RE: Squadrons on U.S. CVEs have 54 planes (4/19/2008 3:46:14 PM)

In order to draw replacements from the VR squadrons, the fleet CV squadrons need to be set to 'ACCEPT REPLACEMENTS', then they will draw as required at the end of the turn.
