puresimmer -> Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/1/2008 3:00:59 PM)

I have an announcement to make. After a great 3+ year run with Matrix, I have received a very special offer to join Wolverine Studios, which I have accepted. Initially I will be developing a title "Draft Day Sports: Baseball" which, at this time has no scheduled release date. I'm super excited about the unique opportunity to be a part of a growing company focused on sports sims.

So, what does that mean for PureSim Baseball 2007?

Nothing, business as usual. I will continue to provide support on these forums, and patches if critical issues arise, and Matrix will continue to offer PS 2007 in their stable of titles. I am very happy with the state of PureSim and with the patch released this weekend I am confident the game will be a great option to scratch your Baseball sim itch this season and beyond.

On a personal note, I'd like to first thank Dave and Erik from Matrix, who were incredibly understanding and supportive with my decision. You guys know how wishy washy I can be, imagine what it was like for them :) Truly classy guys, bravo. It has been refreshing to work with such a professional team of people at Matrix. People that genuinely care about their developers, which, in this industry separates Matrix from the pack.

Lastly, I want to thank the PureSim community for the great support you have given PureSim. You guys keep me coming back!

I'm excited about the expanded opportunities ahead at Wolverine, but a little sad to be leaving Matrix.

No, this is not an April fool's joke. [:)]

Regards,

Shaun Sullivan
Developer, PureSim Baseball 2007

Wrathchild -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/1/2008 4:12:22 PM)

Though, as a relative newbie, I was looking forward to a new version and evolution of PureSim, I would also be interested in the new game. Is there any information out about it yet? The perfect world would be allowing us to import PureSim associations into the new game. If the new game gets the kind of support that PureSim has, then I want to stay on board.

LetsPlay2 -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 12:25:27 AM)

Does this mean no PS2009 ??

Thanks for the work Shaun !!! [&o]

Jestre -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 1:08:21 AM)

I am under the impression that the game Shaun will develope for Wolverine will be an enhanced Puresim.....

sovereignstar -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 1:54:37 AM)

Congrats, Shaun.  You're one of the good guys and I'll definitely check in with you over at Wolverine.

33sherman -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 4:26:35 AM)

I think this is great news. Puresim is a great game already, and the partnership with Wolverine should push it to another level. I'm happy with 1.71 for now, and I can't wait for DDS Baseball.

Congratulations Shaun!

DonBraswell -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 6:21:44 AM)

I don't know what this means. But, this most likely this is not the place to discuss what is happening.

Best of luck to you, keep up the great work!

David Heath -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/2/2008 11:59:55 PM)

Hi Guys

Feel free to discuss what you like.  Shaun is a great developer and I truly feel in love with baseball again because of PureSim.  I know this next game will be excellent as well and I am looking forward to it.

David

KG Erwin -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 12:49:16 AM)

Thanks, David. Here's my view: PureSim is a solid game NOW, and I'll be sticking with it. Its relative simplicity without sacrificing depth is its strongest point.

We will all be curious about Draft Day: Baseball. Will it be PS Mark II or something completely different? At this point, none of us have a clue.

I see an analogy between PS and what's become of Steel Panthers: World at War. SPWAW is still being updated through its fanbase, and is still a personal favorite. I can see PS going down that same road, with fan enhancements keeping the game alive for years to come.

Here's the thing: the game is complete, and it IS a classic. There's little to be done except design a new game from the ground up. That, I believe, is what Shaun is now doing.

puresimmer -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 2:38:08 AM)

I will continue to release fixes for PureSim whenever we need them. I know there are a lot of people that enjoy PureSim "as-is" and I appreciate (and support) that.

Maybe I'll even write a few add-ins ;)

Shaun

dneely -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 2:50:26 AM)

Thanks Shaun!

You know all of us in the PureSim community support you regardless and speaking for myself I am excited about all that can be accomplished when you and Wolverine collaborate on the next version of your game. Looking forward to it!!!

KG Erwin -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 3:22:25 AM)

Cool. Perhaps a bit more icing on the cake, then? (licking lips) [:D]

dzanr -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 4:37:29 PM)

Reality check:

This sounds like a very good opportunity for Shawn, and I have no doubt that his work for Wolverine Studios will yield a great product. But at the same time, Shawn's commitment to Wolverine signals the beginning of the slow death of PureSim.

I'm sure that Matrix's and Shawn's intentions to provide fixes and the occasional add-in to PS2007 are sincere. But in this day and age where the rate of change in the world is at hyperspeed and technologies evolve seemingly overnight, it takes a fulltime commitment to keep any software product of any kind of application viable, fully-functional and current. We are all pushed and pulled from several directions and are forced to make choices in the allocation of our time, resources, and emotions. Software developers are certainly no different.

The only way PureSim will survive is if it has a dedicated developer whose primary focus is PureSim. My question is this: Who has the proprietary rights to PureSim - Matrix or Shawn?

If it is Matrix then perhaps they can contract someone else with the skills and love of baseball to commit to PureSim, which would mean a long learning curve as he gets familiar with the program code. But at least there would be good chance that the game would survive and continue to be evolve and to be supported.

If Shawn has the proprietary rights and he chooses not to sell them, then I have no doubt that over time PS will start to fade away until it drops off the radar completely. With his family, his real job, and Wolverine Studios all with a higher priority that PureSim and all vying for his time and attention, just how much PureSim development and support can we realistically expect?

This is in no way intended as a criticsm. I enjoy PureSim very much and would like to see it stick around and continue to get broader and better. At the same time this sounds like a great opportunity for Shawn. And I wish him, Wolverine and Matrix only the best in future with much success. We will all win if a great baseball sim results from all of Shawn's future efforts with Wolverine.

But the reality is that PureSim is probably on its way out and will be a relic of software application history in 2 or 3 years.

I probably need to be more clear about the approach. The "new" game at Wolverine will be an updated version of PureSim with a new user interface and new features. I am starting with the current PS 2007 code and moving from there. For all intents and purposes it is the next PureSim, not simply a spiritual successor. I have 100% ownership of the code, brand, everything.

I encourage you guys to participate in the forums at Wolverine if you have input on things you'd like to see, fresh ideas etc.

Visit Draft Day Sports: Baseball Forums

PureSim 2007 will still get support for critical issues, but I am no longer adding new features to it's core code.

LetsPlay2 -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/3/2008 5:14:17 PM)

1 more question:

Will Puresim now be able to integrate with DDS-Baseball ?

If we started an Association with PS will the DDS-Baseball let us keep our old Associations or will need to start over from scratch ??

I'm not sure -- not if it impedes any of the innovations I am considering. Backward-compatibility can be quite an encumbrance some times.

This is also often a pretty controversial topic :)

Thank you sir !

I wasnt trying to stir up problems though![:(]

Thanks again !!

Oh.

That's different.

Nevermind.

[:D]

(Actually, this is really great news Shawn. Thank you very much for the clarification.)

Beach23BoyP -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/4/2008 5:38:19 AM)

Hey guys -- I suppose I was correct in my asking for a new interface. I'm not really a clairvoyant. Just a lucky guesser. Anyway, I think this was needed to keep the series going and to give Baseball Mogul and OOTP a real run for their money.

BTW, Draft Day Pro Basketball is an excellent game, but I always go back to Baseball. I think it adapts best to the computer.

Taz0713 -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/7/2008 9:55:05 PM)

Why is it when I go away for a vacation with my family all of the important announcements are made?

Oh well, Shaun, I hope that this works out for you and I will follow along. (I know what a simple puppy I am).

Can you tease us with one or two of these?

Frozen Stiffer -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/9/2008 2:57:08 AM)

I'm rather sick today, so my mind isn't too clear and I can't put the novel-length posts that I normally leave in a thread like this. However, allow me to get the important stuff out and said...

Shaun, congratulations. It's great to hear your huge fan-base praise you and Puresim, the Eighth Wonder Of The World, but after Matrix supporting you and believing in you so much, having yet ANOTHER renown gaming house acknowledge your skill and abilities by bringing you onto their family- there is just no question of how talented and appreciated you are. I'm happy for you and, in a non-patronizing way, proud of you.

I've been playing Puresim for several years now, as evidenced by the frequent problems my flagship association runs into and with which I pester you constantly, and I know that ten years from now, when operating systems will no longer run the original Puresim, I'm sure I'll have that one antiquated, dedicated computer running XP just for the sake of this game. Though we have already asked much and you have delivered much more, I will risk asking one more thing of you- a favor to a friend, to a loyal fan and to an ardent supporter. Please consider backwards-compatibility, so that the associations that I and others have put so much time, effort and (so honestly) emotion into, will not die.

If the new version looks nothing like the old- fine. If all the buttons are in completely different places, and with completely different labels- fine. If the game requires you to sacrifice your first born child every time you lose Game 7 of the World Series- fine. All that I ask is to please make it backwards compatible so that the histories we have established are not lost or forgotten or wasted.

Quite honestly, a lack of backwards compatibility will be a deal breaker for me. I will just keep playing the last version of Puresim instead of having to start over with a new team.

I only have one true need:  make an awesome baseball game.

If you build it, they will come.

Well, he's already made one awesome game, so the odds are in his favor.

Bustoff -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/11/2008 4:17:33 AM)

I'm with Wrathchild and the venerable Frozen Stiffer. If it's not backwards compatible, that's going to be a deal-breaker. We've put a lot of blood, toil, tears and sweat into our associations. Don't let them die.

puresimmer -> RE: Announcement - Wolverine Studios (4/11/2008 4:35:57 AM)

Time will tell, but I am already doing some things very differently, so it will be a challenge.

You can always continue your associations with PS 2007 and then start a new one or two with Draft Day Sports: Baseball.
