Charleton Heston one of the greats of our youth has gone to those chariot races in the sky. <sniff> I just watched him last night in "Planet of the Apes" too.

Yeah, his politics were a bit contraversial, but he was a great actor.

I met him once, he was very polite. It was at a book signing for his autobiography. It was such a great day for me.

At least it gave people one less reason to insult both the owners of this board
and his memory by turning it into yet more political bullshit.

I would have hoped that at least in this case, people could pass on the opportunity to get in a political dig.

No more political comments, folks. I'm keeping this thread open for now for anyone who wishes to pay his _respects_.

I liked many of his films very much.

May he rest in peace.

Another screen legend goes to the Big Backlot in the Sky.

Titanwarrior89 -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/6/2008 6:23:31 PM)

He did make some good films.  May he go in gods grace.

sabre1 -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/6/2008 6:39:02 PM)

He was a great actor.  I loved the film El Cid.

gunny -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/6/2008 7:43:32 PM)

I was influenced mostly by his sci fi movies that came out in real time for me as a kid. At 8 years old at the Drive-In watching the Omega Man battle the psycho albinos. Or the hopeless ending fom Beneath the Planet of the Apes. And wow eating people! These were movies we bragged about seeing to our friends, the concepts were all our little minds could fathom. They would not have seemed so real if done by anyone else but Heston. Such is a testiment to his abilities. Even now these lesser Sci-fi movies have an active cult following.

Brigz -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/6/2008 8:03:14 PM)

One his first movies that I recall seeing when I was a little kid was "The Naked Jungle". It was about a plantation owner in South America battling army ants. And I think one of his best parts was as the ranch foreman in the movie "The Big Country" with Gregory Peck and Jene Simmons. If you haven't seen "The Big Country" then you owe it to yourself to see it. A great movie.

Another great actor is gone.

RIP Charleton. Enjoyed alot of your movies. [:(]

Omega Man > I am Legend (the new movie). Although it would have been best if both had actually stuck closer to the novelette.

I have to say, for all its cheesiness, I really like Soylent Green from all of the Heston movies. Of course Ben Hur and Ten Commandments are classic (and what brought me to the Heston table), but his dystopia films are just so darn fun!

I would say that he starred in more dystopic future films than any other actor:
Planet of the Apes
Soylent Green
The Omega Man
In the Mouth of Madness (sort of a dystopic future)

He was just so good to show a sense of passion, drama, and power. His voice was, like James Earl Jones, a force in itself.

My favorite Heston movie was the little known and little watched "Touch of Evil"

A film noir thriller made way before it's time.

Another Orson Wells film that IMO is much better than "Citizen Kane."

If you wish to view this masterpiece try to get the 1998 director's cut.

Barthheart -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/7/2008 3:26:06 AM)

Just got one of his movies for my b-day last week - The Omega Man.... the first adapation of I am Legend made in ~1975. Great fun.

He will be missed.

Doggie -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/7/2008 4:03:43 AM)

Actually, there's a much earlier version of Omega Man featuring Vincent Price.  Black and white, circa 1959 or so.

Barthheart -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/7/2008 4:10:49 AM)

You are correct, Vincent Price in The Last Man on Earth crica 1964.

gunny -> RE: Ben Hur dies at 84...another sad day for us. (4/7/2008 6:32:24 AM)

Harry Belefonte did "the World the Flesh and the Devil" in 1959, which I think is the first last man type movies. It precedes the three movies based on Richard Matheson’s novel I Am Legend. He dukes it out in Nuked Manhatten.

I played Moors last time and killed El Cid in a battle, next time I will play Spain [;)]
