Monkeys Brain -> OT: Anybody here from music publishing business? (4/9/2008 1:42:01 AM)

Well, I have friends that have band called "The Sale". They are looking for
the publisher and I promised to help them as much as I can.

Before you tell me that this website is about wargames, I know :)
But many people read this so at least you will hear their songs (if you want
of course). I apologize if somebody will find this a bit too much, sorry to
those! :)

And I hope that Matrix Games (Erik Rutins, David Heath) will not find this troublesome.

I have some other plans to try to get them contacts and they are also
working on it but anyway maybe someone here have also some idea. All
comments are welcome :) My email is vonconrad@gmail.com you can also contact
me here.

They have produced and mixed 16 songs, all material on English. They are
professional musicians with many years of making music and playing in
various bands. Lead guitar, and guy who composed all of their song, Alen
Kraljic is my friend and he played in some of biggest Croatian rock bands
(they are not known abroad but they are very popular here, "Pips, Chips and
Video Clips" and "Majke" etc...).

Thanks! :)

Mario

Well it's not all about wargames(Note the baseball and football game) and besides it's called general discussion.

I would say that they need to sell it(download style) themselves without a record company. Much less overhead,Can sell it cheaper so many might try it that otherwise wouldn't etc.... Best part is they get to keep most of the profits minus expenses. Don't know how many members in a band but figure at least 4. Each needs a cut, so basically they wont get really rich being with a label unless they go huge.

Do you have any specific site that do that selling for you?
Because I doubt that you were thinking that they setup a site, and invest in marketing of it? (that would be too costly for a small band with limited resources)
Thanks. Sorry for asking, I am no expert in this.

I plan also to contact Iggy Pop's manager for Europe. I have met him during Iggy Pop's concert and sent him some music for Iggy. I will ask him for some contacts. I also plan to contact some music magazines, they might have some contacts of publishers.

I can't vouch for the site but something like this might be useful. They can put samples of songs there for promotional purposes.

http://www.soundclick.com/

I found it via the Line 6 forums. You can go through their forums (and similar ones) for more ideas.

Basically, look to see what others are doing to get a start. Then keep plugging away. Since they're a European band, that seems focused on making good music, I'd suggest they try to build a following over there first. The audience will likely be more receptive. It's not likely any US companies would be interested in them. At least not until they've got 25k+ downloads and thousands of Myspace friends. Even then it's unlikely unless they've got something that distinguishes them from millions of other talented musicians in the world. Generally that means "sex appeal". For every discerning music lover there are 100 kids that buy a song because they think the lead singer is hot (or cool). Video killed the radio star and then American Idol came along and desecrated the body.

If I sound discouraging it's because there are few career paths as discouraging as one in the music business. However, it is possible to reach the brass ring and at least hold it for awhile. Boldness and dogged persistence can pay off.

Good luck to you. I liked what little I heard of the band's music.

no not really.. I gave up my musical dreams up in the 80's when the Glam/HM look did not correspond to the 270lb football jock in bicycle shorts look.

But seriously, I cant remember the specifics but I remember reading something Donita Sparks said and it dealt with what you are probably looking for. Google her and I believe she is involved in some record label that caters to lesser known bands. But dont quote me on that. It's 5:38AM. I've had no sleep, 5 pots of coffee, a computer thats crashing frequently and I gotta go to work in 1/2 hr. I might be babbling.

Hey thanks Man!!
I have phoned lead guitar player (he also composed all stuff) and told the what you said and he said "Super!". We appreciate your help!
Heh, they are talented. I am glad that you like their songs. I just got CD with 11 songs of them and they have also new song for new CD [;)] but that is still not recorded, mixed, digitally edited. Well, today you can make music in your home with Acid or something.
I like their song Shakira, and they have few more good numbers. Lead guitar is one of the best guitar players in Croatia (that sound pompous but it is and this is small country but anyway...).

I am more into The Clash...

There is nice small anedote about The Clash & Rolling Stones.
Well, it was 1981. (or 1982), I've read that on one book about The Clash, and The Clash challenged Rolling Stones to play one VS. concert in LA. So The Clash vs. Rolling Stones.
Guess what, Rolling Stones got **** in the pants (CHICKENS! [:D] )
and didn't accepted the challenge.
Now when I hear how The Clash were playing in 1981. I can understand why. Heh.

Hey man thanks!! We will check this out! I have forwarded this also to main manager (I am just helping voluntarily).

5: 38 AM - That sounds good :)))

(when I emailed Jon Van Caneghem to say to him that I wrote review of Heroes 4 till 4:00 am he said to me "That sounds good") heh

Hentzau -> RE: OT: Anybody here from music publishing business? (4/12/2008 3:19:05 AM)

You might want to look at where you started with this post as myspace has something in the works for musicians http://media.www.dailyvidette.com/media/storage/paper420/news/2008/04/11/News/Myspace.Changes.Beneficial.To.Bands-3318593.shtml

Just don't recommend any SES type activation to them Bloodstar. [;)]

Thanks, I forwarded the link to them.

Well, somebody predates me from Usenet [:D]

If you know chronology - I never supported activation copy protection per se. I supported the right of companies to decide what is better for them. And now when I think about it - right after I said that Shrapnel put cd keys on a black list Matrix has started to do it. Coincidence? Or maybe they had that even before.
I have always telling that THIS is right method especially for wargaming niche games where crackers will crack only 1.0 version and don't bother with later patches. Because wargames are OBSCURE they have that LUCK to not be so visible on pirates radar. They are not mainstream.
Before as you know some wargames were cracked patches inclued.
But ever recently on the Usenet is flying lies and I don't even want to tell someone that he is lying there I got tired.
For instance Distant Guns is not cracked so they again are talking nonsense there (like everything eventually get's cracked, aha, yeah sure).
But of course that I support cd key copy protection becuase it turned out to be effective against pirates and at the same time user friendly. But I don't approve that hostility that is under all this. And I have seen through that Brad Wardell marketing ploys where some other people were blind and they have two eyes.

But this is not the place to discuss this because the thread will be locked very soon. And yes, I am less bothered than many about activation games (that doesn't mean that I don't see that some people hate that so companies must choose what they want carefully, on a bigger market they can be more ruthless).
edit: I have to say this - when I value the game I value the game. Is it good for my money or is it not. I don't do local idiotic game like some people that first WATCH how game is protected and then decide is game worth buying. So from that stance I don't retreat one step. If game is creation then it is creation. Copy protection pre se has nothing to do with my decision will I buy some game or not. This will not make people less slaves if they don't like some copy protection hehe. There are a lot more other things in life that interfer with your freedom. This thing is rather trivial.

http://donitasparks.cashmusic.org/

This is what I was refering to. Have them check into something like cashmusic. Seems it might be something that can help them get out there into peoples ears. Not to sure though. Not like the old days of selling cassettes and vinyl from the old van, post show.......I'm the one who had to do it since I was the smart one...could count to two.... without using my fingers...[:)]
