gladiatt -> newbie question about défending bases (4/11/2008 2:20:15 PM)

Hi everyone.
Still having questions, on game tactics.

Does it make sense to put troops in hexes adjacant to bases that AI will try to invade ?
I mean: does the AI sometimes land in adjacant hexes, or not ?

If not, i should put a max of troops in the base.
If AI try to land in "undefended" hexes before attacking the nearby base, i should put some adjacant defenders.

Any advice ?

the AI will never land in non base hexes and it´s also banned in most PBEM

The latter is determined by "House Rules" - rules made between players to cover a multitude of "grey areas" in the conduct of WITP.

Thanks for the advice.

By the way, i'm far away of making PBEM : i'm just beginner, and i won't give a good fight against a capable opponent....Must train before against AI;
Maybe in a century or two ?[;)]

You can always try to find another beginner... but learning on the AI is a good idea.

This is quite true; but don't ignore the dots, they are always fair game. A dot is a supply source per the supply rules and as such can serve as the base for a major amphib assault.

Once you have learned how to make the basic moves (create an invasion TFs, shut down an airfield, and so on) I believe that the next step is a PBEM game. (IMHO)

Play against a capable opponent (of course not too strong) is a good thing for you;
you earlier learn in this way [;)]

Haem...don't want still to serve as "breakfast" for a oldby...[:D]
rather learning a few things before...i'm just playing Witp since a week..[;)]

Can i ask why ?
In Philippines campaign, Japanese land in legaspi and lingayen, then march through island toward manilla;
in Burma, Japanese walk through jungle to attack imphal, mandalay, rangoon;
taking back Rabaul, the us begin by landing at cap Gloucester, then march along the island (new britain???) toward Rabaul.

So, why not allowing base attack coming from land even if they are port ?

Alfred -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/14/2008 10:18:15 AM)

Landing in non dot/base hexes is prohibited in most PBEM because the invader does not suffer any disruption.  If you land at a dot/base hex you incur some casualties, whereas if you land next to a dot/base hex, you incur no casualties.

There is nothing wrong with landing at a base and then marching to your ultimate destination.

Alfred

bradfordkay -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/14/2008 10:20:31 AM)

Legaspi and Lingayen are bases in WITP, as are Khota Bahru and Kuantan in Malaya. Where the US landed at Cape Gloucester is the Sag Sag base in WITP. Basically, the game gives you the historic landing sites and several more.

So, if landing on a "base" with "few" defenders, and then marching toward an other base is allowed? fine. Having some rules, and understanding them to respect them is "fair"[:'(].

First you will have to capture the base with the "few" defenders and force them to withdraw before you will be able to advance to another enemy base.

It seemed evident that my opponent (AI or Human) won't help me by saying "Ok guy, you can cross our position, and going to wherever you want as long you don't ask our beer reserve !" [;)].
I think the Pacific war was some kind of fight this way: invading point, fighting for them, so as to use them as base against other base, bombing them, invading them, fighting for them, so as to use them .......and so on.
So the expression "hoping island" (right?). In french we would say "jouer a saute-mouton" ("jump over sheep"). Or even "faire des sauts de grenouilles" (make frog-jumps).

kfmiller41 -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/15/2008 11:29:48 PM)

gladiatt and Gem35

if you want a game vrs someone who isnt a veteran and can help you learn (as i don't really know the exploits some players do[:D]) feel free to send me an e-mail or pm. Can always play as far into the game as you like (if you want to try Japan) and if you feel like your not doing well we can always start over. I usually play CHS but stock is fine (at least I dont get shot to heck by flak[&o])

Gem35 -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/16/2008 12:04:10 AM)

thanks miller41, I am going to wait until AE comes out to try a pbem.
Problem is, I work weekends and have all my free time during the week.
I don't want to discourage opponents but that would have to be the first house rule, only one day or so turns on weekends.[:(]

kfmiller41 -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/16/2008 1:48:52 AM)

NP, I too am waiting on AE,  but for players trying to learn the best way (IMHO) is PBEM. Anyway I usually do a turn a day and same on weekends (becuase I usually work those too). You would be surprized by the number of players who don't even get a turn a day, for the real hardcore it can take a while on each turn, probably why I dont do so well[:D] No patience[:-]

USSAmerica -> RE: newbie question about défending bases (4/16/2008 2:58:49 AM)

I can usually do a turn a day, but family life often intervenes and prevents me from getting to the game.  Brother Mynok is very patient with me.  [8D]
