What game would you recommend on the tactical level? Is there any game out there with the same kind of flexibility toaw has?

Steel Panthers?

try with Panzer Campaigns...if you have time!!!

Boonierat -> RE: tactical level game (4/14/2008 12:35:00 PM)

Either Steel Panthers or John Tiller's Campaign Series.

Since you didn't specify what kind of game, I'll recommend the Rome:Total War mod Europa Barbarorum.[:)]

damezzi -> RE: tactical level game (4/16/2008 6:26:01 AM)

It's true, I didn't specify, but any time period is good for me. In fact, the first thing I look for in a game is good AI and, after that, the capacity to edit scenarios. So, any of those games present a real challenge when playing against the AI?
I remember that I really loved the concept behind combat mission series, with simultaneous turns and 3d terrain, but after winning the first couple of scenarios without even knowing what I was doing, I just gave up.

Warren -> RE: tactical level game (4/16/2008 2:43:58 PM)

I second John Tiller's Campaign Series. The AI isn't that great on the offense but depending on the scenario design, there are quite a few decent ones. The editors are good. If you like designing and tinkering it is a great series. A new update, v1.03, is coming out shortly that will revive the dynamic campaign game and fix a lot of existing issues.

Do you think they'll ever splice TOAW to a tactical game, so that TOAW becomes the "campaign manager" while more detailed combat takes place in the tactical game?

rhinobones -> RE: tactical level game (4/18/2008 2:53:09 AM)

You might want to give TacOps a look. I haven’t played with it for years, but I understand that it has an editor and has been expanded since its introduction. As far as I know it deals with modern warfare . . . but that may also have been expanded to include earlier eras. As far as flexibility comparable to TOAW, doubtful.

Regards, RhinoBones

Yeah, I've been imagining that for a long time. But making a program simulating, say, thousands, or even tens of thousands of men fighting in an area covering many square miles tactically will be difficult, and may result in your CPU exploding. [:D]

LOL!

Might happen in ToaW XXI, assuming your ram is quantified in 'google-bits', (or what ever it is after 'Terra-bits'..)

Of course you'll probably need the latest upgrade to 'total cyborg flash memory' just to address the the opening page of the game from your new 'Implants'...

Might be a bit late for some of us, eh?

desert -> RE: tactical level game (4/19/2008 12:17:13 AM)

Well, in 20 years we will be wiping our butts with computers that are more powerful than any that exist today, so it's not as far off as you think. Maybe EActivisionMatrixoft Corp. will be the next to pick up the series.[8D]

I had that happen once, and It was REALLY NEAT to watch (if somewhat expensive). I'd been neglectful about cleaning out the box and my power supply shorted out...

Looked like the 4th of July for a few seconds as the fans spewed sparks out of the case!

Oo... er!

I too am rather neglectful in this regard. I have one elderly-but-still-useful machine which makes odd noises when spun up.

Do you have to dismantle them and clean by hand, or is a quick wheech with the hoover enough?

A thorough application of canned compressed air seems to do enough, if done often enough.

One trys to learn from one's mistakes, eh? [8|]

..best to take them apart then blow off every board, and especially the fan things, they really get mucky...

..i just load the main frame on the bike and drop it round the local vulcanising shop, the compressors a bit steam driven but it's the only one for miles, anyway they enjoy it...errr they also make good scythe blades..
