Magnum357 -> Is there any hope for us Win 98 Users? (4/19/2008 12:04:09 AM)

David, let me first say that I think is a fine Football game, I was able to play it for a short time on my computer because I had a Hard drive with Windows XP that allowed me to play the game. Unfortunetly, I only have Windows 98 and I could never get the game to even load on the OS.

I have tried to look for a cheap copy of even Windows XP Home edition but they are still very pricy with the money I make. Is they any chance that you might consider supporting Windows 98 for Maximum Football, or is this just not possible?

Microsoft does not allow the old .dll files to be supported on any new product.  Because of this, Windows 98 is no longer supported.

I understand your plight.  I use Windows 98se on my game machine, because it supports many of my old games much better than XP, but I have been forced to move Maximum Football to an XP machine.  This caused me some downtime that could have been better used for bug hunting and play creation.

Ya, I know what you mean. I personally like using Windows 98 (its still not a bad OS) but Microsoft wants to force the customer to upgrade. Ok, I can see that they are buisness, but what I don't understand, if you want people to actually buy your product, can't they at least make purchasing there OS more affordable??? Is there something wrong selling copies of XP for say 40 bucks?

Heck, I can't even find an old copy of XP Home edition cheaper then a 100 dollars. I like Maximum Football, but I don't have the money to dish out that much just to play one game.

I still keep a backup PC around with Windows ME and a Voodoo 5 card to play some of my old school titles.  However, if you're serious about finding XP cheaper than $100 - as of right now on Ebay there is one for $60 plus shipping (see item #320240532311).

If it was a true market rather than a defacto-monopoly, the price would be around $40-$60 rather than $100-$200 for the OS.  I don't think we really want to get into that here though, as there is a thread for that topic in the General area of the Matrix Games forum.

just curious but does maxfb support linux? I just installed it on a my pc as a dual boot option, to just play with it. if maxfb supported linux it would give users a free option.

Maximum-Football is a Windows DirectX based game.

It does not support the Linux OS platform.

I have not tried Maximum Football under WINE for Linux.

I'm sorry, there is simply not enough demand to try and support that OS. Microsoft considers that a dead OS and so the technology I'm using now does not work properly on it and nobody is building new drivers for it. If I ran into a problem I needed microsoft or hardware vendor support for, I'd never be able to get it. Combine that with not having enough time to try and debug problems on it, it's simply not something I can support. Sorry.

Maximum-Football was built on WinXP-SP2 and I support both WinXP-SP2 and Vista. When SP3 comes out for WinXP (supposed to be towards the end of April) I'll being trying to support that as well.

That may be an option if someone wanted to dual boot a system using grub 1.5. (wine that is)

VCFL Commish -> RE: Is there any hope for us Win 98 Users? (4/20/2008 5:43:39 PM)

i am running the game on windows 98 now .I thing the game stopped being updated for me at 1.139 or something like that.
i always feel a little behind the curb on this stuff. The VCFL is on hold till I get a new system to handle the updates.Do to health problems its taking me a lot longer then it should for me to fork out the money for a new system.
