hammerhead -> Unit limit in W@W scenarios (9/27/2000 9:12:00 AM)

Below is a discussion of subject issue. I have copied it here in order to get perhaps a more focused as well as numerous response. QUOTE FRM ME: I am creating a scenario in which an entire US armored division is on the map. I had read and understood that the W@W version 2.3 would allow for 400 formations and 800 units ( and version2.2 allows the 400/800 f/u as well). However, I failed to set the formation number to 400 and after many hours of work on my game I reached some 55 formations and 400 units. Silly me! Noticing this I immediately tried to set the formation number to the max 400: to no avail. Am I stuck? Do I have to redo the whole thing? Or is there a way to bump up the formation/unit numbers to 400/800 ? So is there some trick , or..? ------------------ Voriax Matrix Veteran posted September 26, 2000 03:59 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Uuuugh...I think this 400/800 was for *both* sides added together, not for one side. I think it may have been discussed waaay back, you could try a search at the main forum. This is definitely Wild Bill's territory though Voriax IP: Logged hammerhead Matrix New Recruit posted September 26, 2000 10:03 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have already brought this question to WB, Paul V and even one of the programmers....they referred me to this forum. So I will stick here 'til I get a firm yes or no. Perhaps I should also try some of the other forums? If I recall, the manual was pretty clear that it was referring to 400formations/800 units for each player. And since I have had no trouble getting far more than 200 units (as you suggested is the meaning of the limit) this would seem to be at least still in question. It would also seem to make sense based on the max size of the map: 100x240 which works out to 3 by 7+ miles. And since five to seven miles would be the length for most set piece engagements of division size, as a review of any US Army battle map will illustrate, this would seem to be a good reason for providing more units.

Good man, that is what you should do. The most in my personal experience that I have gotten are around 500 units, in around 160 formations. I've never been able to exceed that. That is my personal experience. I'm not saying it can't be done, just that I have never been able to do it. Perhaps Michael Wood, who programmed this part of SPWAW will read this post and give us some ideas on how to achieve 400-800 ratio. Michael is very good about clarifying these points and I have a strong feeling he will respond to you. Hey thanks Bill. But I have figured out the answer, incredibly, by my self. It was a clue in the new 4.0 manual. I read there that the way to set formations is to set one then set the other at XXX. Thinking along these lines I figured that the earlier versions of W@W do the same. And it its true. The formation quantity is a DELIMITER...that is when you reach a total of 400 FORMATIONS(regardless of which side has what) you can select no more UNITS. I.e., you can have 100 fomations one one side and 300 on the other ...but once you get to a TOTAL of 400 you can buy no more UNITS. So if you have, say, 199 formations on one side and 201 on the other you will not be allowed and more units. If you limit the amount of formations to something much less, then you can get up to 400 units per side ...but no more. Whether you can get more than 400 units per side, I have not yet tested ...but I kind of doubt it. WB-Thanks for the qucik responses. This was driving me nuts! I hope this might help explain to some of you why your limit is suddenly reached w/o you really understanding why. Sorry for the long winded explanation ...but when I exlained it to one of my co-designers it took a while for him to catch on to what I was trying to say.

Excellent analysis, Hammerhead! You hit it right on the money. I guess I'm a little dense. I did some checking after I read your post and you are right. Nicely done, my friend. I certainly admire your tenacity! Wild Bill ------------------ In Arduis Fidelis Wild Bill Wilder Coordinator, Scenario Design Matrix Games
