This is a common theme. A base needs to be taken out, a strikeforce is mobilized to take the base. They land, they do their thing and they win. Now what? What do you do with them? Do you keep them there and attempt to supply them? Or do you keep the lift in the area to pull them out? Use the battered units to take the next base? Or do you let the lift retire to launch other offensives?

I would say in answer to all of the above that it depends on the individual situation.  If the base taken will be built up as a large base then the troops will be able to rest and rebuild there with the ships moving off to other duties.  If it's just to deny the base to the enemy then they could be returned by the ships to the rear areas for r&r.  Either way battered units need rest before a new mission or their strength will fall short of the new task.  Troops need rotation as to planes and ships to be effective.

Wonder if you could give me some advice. I forgot to cut Lae off, so the 2+ divisiions I landed had to chase the Japanese and I caught and destroyed them in the hex next door. The good deal of supply I had brought to the Lae invasion got sucked into this beach hex and its hell pulling them out w/o a port.

US Regiments were down to high 40's low 50's assult strength. Aus Brigades were down in the 70's. Lae is large  but short on supply....9k currently.PM is 9/9/9 and has 140k supply.

Should take them back to Aus. Or PM?

Things have been going a bit squirly...how long should it take to get them back up to combat strength?

Tactical situation I hold everything west and South of Fen on NG. Japs still hold Everything N.

Its Mid Feb 43.

18.3 Ground Unit Replacements

Every day, during the Supply Operations Phase, the computer checks all ground units to see if they are up to full strength. For this purpose the computer adds up the total strength of the main unit and any sub-units with the same name and compares this total against the expected full strength of the unit.

If the computer deems replacements are warranted, it will build a sub-unit that contains the forces needed to return the unit to full strength.

This sub-unit will arrive 7 days later in either Truk for the Japanese, or Brisbane or Noumea for the Allies depending on if the unit is part of SOPAC (Noumea) or SWPAC (Brisbane).

For replacements to be built for a unit, the main unit must still exist somewhere on the map.

- Replacements are deemed warranted if the unit is missing either at least 25% of the expected full strength of the unit or at least 10 items (i.e. squads, guns, etc).

- The size of the replacement unit can never be greater than 25% of the expected full strength of the unit. The experience of the sub-unit will be 80% of the experience of the parent unit.

- Once a replacement sub-unit is built, no additional replacement sub-unit will be built for that unit for at least 14 days.

I checked the manual before posting. I think my mistake was taking the assult value as losses, instead of comparing like units. The disabled units threw me I think. More than 2 weeks had passed without replacements and I got concerned.

AA units that aren't "damaged enough" are sitting useless in Aus, and I think that the 32nd/41st will suffer the same fate. Banged up but not banged up enough.
