Sal -> Are Generals selected random? (4/30/2008 4:45:06 PM)

I am getting involved a bit more with FOF but am a bit confused..Playing the Rebs I noticed that Grant is attacking me in the Eastern Theater in the begining of the war..And am not sure why Bueregaurd (check spelling) is a 5 star General and Lee is a four star..
Can understand that in the beginning of the war but Lee never seems to move up in rank or I cant seem to promote him. Is there any time in the game that Generals can be demoted auto or by choice.? Would seem that some Generals who did not perform well were demoted or lost command...Also if I have a unit who's level goes to 0 K and he is still attached to and Army Corps etc. am I still paying upkeep on that unit? Should I disband him or is there a chance he will be reenforced by the camps? Just a few newbie I dont understand questions...
Thanks
Huma

You can promote generals to the next or higher levels if there are any command vacancies available (more than one a turn if vacancies exist). This is determined by the container units in play. Eg 4 armies containers allow 4 four star generals, 5 corps will allow 5 three star generals etc. However some scenarios will start with an over ranked situation so there may be 4 CSA four stars and yet only 2 armies are present, so unless you demote several generals you wouldn't be able to promote a new one until three more army containers are created.

To get a five star general you normally need six academies to be built. If a five star appears at the start that must be down to the scenario. A number of generals start in their historical locations - the remainder and later arrivals begin at the national capital province.

Any general can be demoted at a cost of loss of Governor attitude (promotions produce a lesser positive effect)and a 50% chance that he will resign in a huff.

Note also that the game allows you to choose whether generals have random stats (where Lee or Grant might be only average) or with their historical ratings.

If advanced supply is on reinforcements (replacements) go first to units in containers that have the highest level of supply chosen eg normal would be prioritised ahead of low.

I can add a bit to what Ironclad said. First, Grant does start in the western theater, but the AI can always send him east, especially if it wants to promote the most highly-rated general. A five-star at the beginning of the game strikes me as an impossibility -- is that what happened? From your post I can't tell whether that situation occurred at the beginning or later in the game. If later in the game I'm not sure why the AI would have promoted Beauregard over Lee into the highest position, other than that he was good friends with Jefferson Davis...

May have something to do with the randomized stats, Gil.

I've seen Zollicoffer in place of Beuregard and Cleburne instead of Johnston in the Eastern theater (playing as union vs ai csa). We must see what happens if the stats are not randomized. The AI might be promoting and demoting correctly.

It's also true that Lee was never the highest ranked general.  At the beginning, in fact, he was one of the lower ranked full generals, if my memory serves me correctly.  I'd have to check my references at home, but the highest ranked general (i.e., the one with the earliest date of rank), was a guy named Cooper (again, as I remember).  Ever heard of him?  He never held a field command, but he was in Davis' back pocket for the war.

Yes..there were 2 games I played that Beuregard started as a 5 star General and Lee as a 4 star General and I guess thats what had me confused as to why that was..In two games I played Grant started out in the Eastern Theater and 2 other games the Western Theater..Since I am just learning how to manipulate things I was not sure if it was the settings I was using or not...When starting out as the Rebs what should I concentrate on at first...Buildings, upragrading weapons, paying attention to the gov. wants or needs. Is it better to try to Muster or conscript as to focus on producing units..? I have played the rebs now 4 times on differnt levels one of sargent and have managed to tweek out the win...And is it best to produce camps at first since from what I am getting the camps resupply my units at the end of each turn...I always seem like there is not enough cash to go around but when I focus on mints and Capital buliding other things seem suffer greatly...I am still not sure as to what the ships do other than the runners..I have had ships in the harbors and when an enemy ship comes in to unload there is no confrontation or maybe I dont know how to make the confrontation..Any suggestions...Although the manual seems large when I read it I get more of what I am going to see when I do something rather than what the effects of doing something has on the game...
Thanks
Huma

Sal,
I'm finding these reports about Beauregard, Lee and Grant perplexing, so let me ask: did you install the most recent patch? Also, which scenario are you playing?

As for your questions, note that in the "War Room" sub-forum there are some strategy threads that support all sorts of stuff like that. In general, I would say that the South is so desperate for money and resources that you want to start building up your economy early. My own strategy in Turn 1 is usually to use the 100 Money I start with to build a third blockade-runner, since that will soon more than pay for itself. Building Mines in cities with Ironworks is also important to do very early -- do this in Augusta, where they'll be safe from the enemy. Avoid conscription unless absolutely necessary, because it can cause unrest and make your governors angry. Mustering is fine, though. As for your ships, make sure that they are set to engage the enemy (assuming that you think you have a shot at beating the enemy, which the South usually doesn't unless it puts an awful lot of its resources into its navy).

I hope this all helps. Let us know if you have further questions.

Gil,
I did install a patch..1 point something and I am assuming that there was only one patch.
As for the scenerio, honestly I was not payin to much attention to what I was selecting..2 of the games were small army set ups..I noticed the larger army set up Lee and Beure were both 4 star gens. I will check out the other forum for stratagy..If this happens again I will pay a bit more attention to the settings and start of the game..
Thanks
Huma

Gil R. -> RE: Are Generals selected random? (5/1/2008 7:02:09 AM)

Oh... You were playing the "small setup" scenario instead of one of the July or November ones? That would explain it: that scenario is meant for players to cut their teeth on for a few turns, and the datafiles for generals have not been improved on since the game was released.

If you installed a patch then you're fine, and playing the most recent version of the game.
