sysrkm -> Other 'design your own wargame' programs? (5/1/2008 5:59:37 PM)

Hi folks,

The fact the great Matrix folks gave us The War Engine for Tax Day prompted this question from me: How many other 'design your own wargame' computer programs are there out there? I vaguely remember owning something called 'The Wargame Construction Set' and two spin offs, TWCS 'Tanks!' and 'Rifles' or something along those lines. I really don't remember if either of those allowed hex movement.

What I'm looking for is something that would allow me to use a HEX map and recreate one of my all time favorite games, OGRE/GEV. CarWars would be another game I'd like to computerize.

Of course I'd love to have great counter graphics like those found in SPWAW and SPMBT, but I would settle for less if it would allow me to recreate the game faithfully: (GEV double movement, a decent AI for Ogres, etc) and input some new stuff as well, like fog of war, and reaction fire.

I think HFS at one time made something like this in the mid 90's, but after I bought it and opened it up, the learning curve was too steep for the time I had alloted the project. I don't have any more time now than I did then, but I would think with the advancements in the last 10 to 15 years in PC Programming that such a program that I'm looking for would not be hard to create, and not as hard to program my game.

The War Engine would be GREAT for what I want, except as far as I know, it doesn't allow hex based movement.

Vassal is ok, but it's not a true game in itself, and I want the PC to manage counterstacks and rules, like SPWAW.

Does anyone have any ideas? Regards all, Rob

I think the closest you get right now is Advanced Tactics (AT). While technically a game and not a game engine, the flexibility of the editor allows for AT to work almost as a game engine. Not sure if AT can be used to do what you are after, but if you have a look at the AT forum you'll see some creative ideas worked on.

Hello Widell,

Thanks for the heads up on the game. It probably will NOT work for my needs since both OGRE/GEV and Car Wars are tac level games, but nonetheless it does look interesting. Is there a demo out there for this game?

Also, out of curiosity, what does the sign read in your sig?

Regards,

Rob, aka sysrkm,

You're probably right as AT is somewhere between Operational and Strategic, but more to the strategic side. I'm currently playing the Crete scenario as PBEM and that's pretty operational as the Germans wipe out my poor Commonwealth soldiers. No demo, but maybe the AAR's can give you a flavour of the game?
