Thanks for the help. [&o]

I'll try posting the alternate screenshot first:

Eureka! It worked.[:D]

And now the 'stock' snow terrain:

[image]local://upfiles/26049/B2417EEEF60C4437B91286D451DAEA06.jpg[/image]

The first screenshot seems a little easier on the eyes, at least to me. But I'll have to try playing a full scenario with it to see if it really is any better. Again, this is not intended to be light snow terrain but an alternate to 'stock'.

junk2drive, thanks for the help.

All the games I've played the snow was not light. I'm not certain if you can modify it.

Greg

cw58 I like your alternative to the stock snow. To me it gives better contrast between the darker elements (trees etc) and a more atmospheric "overcast" look. (Unlike yourself, where I come from i've seen a fair bit of snow in my time [:)])
Will you be able to publish the new look graphics sometime? preferably with instructions on how to change them. Or perhaps its possible to use the Mod utility mentioned elsewhere on this forum?

cw58 -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/11/2008 5:27:50 PM)

flying scotsman,

Thanks but I hadn't really planned on "publishing". I couldn't even figure out how to post a screenshot by myself. [;)] Maybe Jason and Co. will introduce new graphics in 1.04.

The process is fairly simple. I'll tell you what I did, if you'd like to try it yourself. The file I modified is the 'Snow3d' bitmap found in the WF or EF folders. I made a copy of the file before making any changes. I opened the file in a program called MGI PhotoSuite which allows me to change the colors on the palette. Then I took about 10 of the whitest colors and decreased the red value by 20 and the green value by 30. This changes the whites to a very light blue/purple. I'm not sure if this can be done with MS Paint as I'm not that familiar with that program. The whole thing takes about 5-10 minutes to do.

This was a first trial, so I'm not sure if the red/green values that I used are the best possible combination.

Or if that sounds like it's more trouble than it's worth, I could send you the modified file and you could swap it out. But you'll have to tell me how to send it, because I don't have a clue.[8|]

Irfanview is a free graphics program that has a colour change feature that I think is easy to use.

sfinlay -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/11/2008 6:10:08 PM)

Thanks junk2drive, i've got irfranview so I will give it a try.

cw58 i've sent you an e-mail (just in case I can't figure it out)

sfinlay -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/11/2008 6:15:02 PM)

Apologies cw58 but for some reason the e-mail I sent you seems to be undeliverable so I'm not sure what we can do. (unless you can send a copy of the file to me) via my member profile.

1925frank -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/11/2008 10:22:04 PM)

When there is a cover of snow on the ground, and when the sun shines, it can be painfully bright outside from all the glare.  That's essentially what the complaint is here.  I agree the example in post 31 gives a good feel for an overcast day during the winter -- everything looks grey.  Good luck on your attempts.

cw58 -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/12/2008 12:23:45 AM)

flying scotsman,

I couldn't send an attachment via your profile, so I sent you an e-mail with my e-address. Hopefully, that will get through and we can work this out.

Thanks for the good wishes. Though the stock snow is probably more realistic, this is one time I would prefer playability over realism. I don't want to have to play wearing these.[8D]

1925frank -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/12/2008 2:44:06 AM)

Sunglasses? Well, now that you mention it, I remember reading about snow blindness caused by the excessive brightness and glare. I read about it in a book about French volunteers against Bolshevism (or the French Legion of Volunteers against Bolshevism) outside Moscow in 1941. No sunglasses for them. My understanding was snow blindness was temporary.

For anyone who's driven on Interstate 35 across Oklahoma, Kansas, and Nebraska or on Interstate 80 across Nebraska in the wintertime, the glare is something else. Without sunglasses, your eyes ache from squinting after a while.

Winter glare is a reality we can probably do without. I had no problem with the current display, but I'd certainly be open to modifications.

This is probably as far as I'm going to take this mod - and I'm pretty happy with it.

Basically you will get Pine forest instead of Snow tree and/or Barren tree settings, representing the Fall and Winter battles in the Hurtgen and Ardennes forests. And if the scenario calls for snow on the ground, this is what you will see with this mod:

I like it too!

Thanks for taking the time. It will add to the atmosphere and save on the eyes. [8D]

No worries Paul, I've been wanting to do this Mod for a long time.

I added Don Maddox's EFII Mud Mod (upgraded for Night Graphics) to the mix. Combined with the pine forests, I think this gives the Hurtgen and pre-snow Ardennes battles a great new look:

Very nice!Bravo!

GavinP -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/16/2008 11:22:25 AM)

Simovitch ..

Great looking snow mod ...

One question,though. How much does it affect movement .. ?

GavinP

simovitch -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/16/2008 3:37:24 PM)

GavinP, these are only graphical changes to the stock graphics. If you load the mod and play a scenario or campaign there is no change to the movement rates; i.e. Forest is still Forest and Mud is still Mud.

another attempt. for those ardennes scenarios:

Not to quibble with your hard work, but this kind of strikes me as the aftermath of strategic bombing with golfballs. I envision an entire squadron of B-17s opening their bays and the bombardiers yelling "Fore!"

Hi,

   Simovitch,

Great work!

Where can we find the download link for youre finished mod?

simovitch -> RE: Light Snow Terrain (5/26/2008 6:06:23 AM)

The finished mod Mod (see post #42 and #46) will be included in an optional folder in Patch 1.03.

West Front: Northwest Europe, Fall-Winter 1944 terrain Mod pack.
May, 2008

This mod replaces the heavy, East Front type snow patterns to provide a lighter, more "Ardennes" look. It also replaces Snow trees and Barren trees with Pine Trees. The reason for this is because most of the battles fought in wooded terrain on the Western Front between October and December 1944 occured in pine forest (Hurtgen, Ardennes, Alsace). It wasn't until January 1945 that the really heavy snows fell in the higher regions of France, Belgium, and Germany, wherein you may wish to revert back to the stock graphics.

Also included as a part of this mod pack is an update of Don Maddox's EFII Mud mod which looks great with the Pine Forests for the pre-snow Ardennes scenarios. I updated Don's original mod to work with Night graphics.
