PatinAZ -> Scenarios and the Editor (5/21/2008 6:29:27 AM)

Some of this may belong in Harpgamer, but I see postings and responses quicker here. I'm trying to use the Caribbean battleset from the new Battlesets that have been posted. And also the HCDA database since it has much more for the countries on this side of the Atlantic.
Is there a way in the Scenario Editor (SE) to see where the installations are (airbases and ports) on the map? I have no idea where the majority of the installations are. A map mode would be really nice. I did find that there were more locations after scrolling thru the list a couple of times. They seem to be scattered among the 'donotuse' entries. Must have been technical reasons for this, but a bit of a challenge.
Also in the upper Group window at some magnifications, you can't scroll to the edges of the map. I was trying to place some groups in and around Trinidad and could not even see it at some settings. I think 2x and 8x were OK (If I remember right) but at 4x it was a problem. This should go to a wish list.
With some playtesting and a decent set of orders written, I have a scenario for some fun almost ready. It is Venezuela (with some reinforcements, spending their oil money) vs the USA spread thin by global commitments and budget restraints. Plays from the blue side only. A red-side version would need a different setup to be fair. Venezuela seizes Trinidad to get their oil and gas resources. US will do what it can to kick 'em out. Without an aircraft carrier available!

Where I see Apaches!

Lucky duck, seeing Apaches!  I do get to see C-130s though, some olace anyway.

DoNotUse entries are created by the people editing databases.  Often they start from one database and mark entries that aren't needed as DoNotUse since there cannot be gaps in annex IDs within each annex.  So each editor handles the approach differently.  I would be making them zDoNotUse with a country zzzz or somesuch to get them all at the end of the listings to prevent some difficult finding the valid entries for the database but I'm not a huge database editor person so that's just my opinion.

Yes, it does seem you need to get cracking on that wishlist at HarpGamer [;)].  Despite what I say below, I do watch the wishlists at HarpGamer more closely because they are laid out in a much more useable format for me than the wishlist thread here.

Not that anyone asked but my feeling is that harpgamer will outlive Matrix publishing the game and maybe a lot of other sites as well so I like to have stuff happen at HarpGamer but won't turn away much conversation here since more of the new players are going to be at Matrix and some just won't agree that HG will be around after Matrix goes away.  If only we could tell the future we'd know for sure where the best bet is [&:].

As Tony has pointed out, the 'donotuse' entries are merely placeholders in the database, since the HCDA was adopted from the HCDB.

I didn't use the 'zdonotuse' nomenclature earlier because I was using up the 'donotuse' entries quite quickly when the HCDA was first under development. I'll probably use that method now that updates are less huge.

And, btw, more installation entries for Venezuela will appear in the next HCDA update.
