Well, my most spectacular newbie mistake so far has been allowing my dreadnoughts to run out of ammo, and keeping them on Patrol/Do not Retire with a reaction range of 6 when the enemy fleet came to town. Wasn't pretty at all [X(].

I really enjoy reading your AARs Rysyoonok, as well as the others that are currently active.

Well,
Hi all. I decided to throw myself at WITP AE having had no experience at all with this system but got WPO as a more manageable introduction to the basics and I am absolutely loving it.

My first effort at Clash of the Titans was more "Clash of the Titan v Mickey Mouse" but I am having a second effort and the Jap AI has changed its first approach completely and I have just succeeded in fighting off a 3 pronged invasion in the PI and am having a very bloody time getting ashore in Formosa with a counter attack of my own.

I am only 2 weeks into the scenario but it is very full on and highly recommended.

This is staying on my HD even though it was bought as a cheap tutorial.Glad others are also enjoying it.

Best wishes
Ian

My history:

I've had WITP since it came out. I was always intimidated by the grand campaign, and wound up using the game as a more refined version of Uncommon Valor, playing the south pacific scenario. Indonesia/Malaysia always seemed like a rat's nest to me with regard to the logistics involved.

When AE came out, I started diddling with the campaign game, since the "UV" scenario isn't there (yet). At this point I'm just testing the waters, but I'm actually further along than I was with WITP.

Then, this weekend, I cranked up WPO on a whim. I had been too chicken here to try the campaign, also. Well, I started it up and contrary to my stereotyping, this is really manageable! I've got the 1922 campaign going and am having fun with it. The Japanese AI seems content to hit the US holdings. The Japanese holdings in Indochina aren't at the same level as in WITP, so there's no blitzkrieg happening through the DEI. The European powers have a reduced presence as well, and I'm pretty content to chill with them unless provoked. On top of this, there’s a thrill to having an old 19th century monitor sitting in Manila. Too bad it needs fixing. Too many barnicles, I guess. I hadn’t looked too closely at the particular ships in each class when throwing together task forces. I’ve decided that I really need to send all the Spanish-American War veterans stateside for coastal defense. It was neat seeing the USS Olympia there. Gridley will fire when ready should the Japanese hit San Diego.

So I figure, I’ll have my fun with this, getting used to all the bases and place names in the game. Once the first or second AE patch is out, I’ll dip my toe in again.

Sorry for rambling…

M-

I agree, as far as playability is concerned, WPO is definitely a more manageable alternative to WITP. I also enjoy seeing those old veteran ships. Along with Olympia there are a ton of others as well, including the Baltimore converted to a minelayer.

The IJN also have a number of Russian pre-dreadnoughts that they captured during the RJW. All in all, a lot of fun stuff in this game!

fmonster -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/25/2009 10:36:32 AM)

I too bought this game with AE to complete the collection, but have already spent more time on it than AE. Those huge battle ships give the game a real romantic feel as an era long since past. I haven't played enough of either to say I like one over the other,... in fact I don't ever see that happening. They are two distinct beasts and I look forward to many years of playing both. Cheers!

Connfire -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/25/2009 8:57:08 PM)

The Japanese, in particular, field a very interesting mix of weapons in this game, ranging from British-built battleships and aircraft, Russian battleships (some of which were built in England, Germany, Italy, or the USA) captured from the Russo-Japanese War, and German U-boats given to them after WWI as war prizes. Very different from the fleet they had in 1941.

Interesting. I've always found AI to be very... timid. But I guess with a short scenario each HQ can be scripted to defend/attack very specific locations... :)

devoncop -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/29/2009 7:50:50 AM)

Hi Rysyonok,

Well i finished the Titan scenario today with a "Decisive Victory" having taken Sakashima, the whole of Okinowa island and won Bataan Island back but without invading Formosa. The sinkings of ships in terms of points were 2 to 1 in my favour and aircraft losses about even.
I enjoyed the first half in particular but by September you are right, the Japanese AI became very timid utilising only its subs and the occasional LBA strike.
I checked at the end and Formosa had huge amounts of troops/fuel/supplies although I had hit the auxilliary fleet pretty hard.

I have learnt a lot of the mechanics of this system though.

Is the campaign AI as timid?

Cheers
Ian

Rysyonok -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/29/2009 1:17:08 PM)

Sadly, yes.

Connfire -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/29/2009 10:45:19 PM)

Does raising the difficulty level help the campaign AI? I'm playing Allies on Historical Difficulty, mid November in the 1922 campaign. I'm still having fun, but mostly because I'm still learning new things and trying new stuff. The 3 times I've encountered IJN BBs or CAs so far they ran away before any major damage could be done by either side. I was hoping once I learned the ropes the AI could give me a more serious challenge on higher levels before I consider moving to PBEM. So far my biggest challenge has been so many unescorted AP and AK targets off Luzon my subs and warships can't intercept them all before running out of ammo.

Exactly. AI does not escort its transports. It's a turkey shoot. And eventually it becomes too easy... regardless of difficulty level.

How much, if anything, has AI captured in your game?

I'm almost embarassed to admit this. Bear in mind I went easy on myself since I never played WitP, and I'm using this scenerio as a teaching tool:

Japan has captured Batan Island, all of Luzon except for Manila, Bataan, Lamon Bay and San Marcelino, all of Mindinao except Davao and Cagayan, and Wake Island. Manila, Bataan, and Davao are under seige, but at this time I'm only concerned about possibly losing Davao.

I have recaptured all of southern Luzon, and seized Marcus Island as a forward base. One visit by IJN BBs either in the Philippines or Marcus could really ruin my day - at this point I'm almost wishing they would show up to make things interesting. Although the IJN bombarded Singapore, once, they've made no other agressive moves against anyone else besides the USA, which is why right now I've limited the war exclusively to USA vs. Japan.

So I'll get basically the same game even if I put it on the hardest level?

Rysyonok -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/31/2009 2:29:56 PM)

Actually you've already experienced more than I ever have so I don't know. When I played AI I'd only lose Guam, Vigan, and Aparri... :)

P.S. Nope, I'd lose Wake too... and that's when it'd usually start, sinking IJN transports in dozens... and then AI goes comatose.

P.P.S. Hardest difficulty.

tex -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/31/2009 7:49:40 PM)

I am playing a 1922 campaign against the AI where I was able to march my Shanghai troops around and take Port Arthur. Meanwhile I am building up my troops in Manila in an effort to take back the northern PI.
Rysynook, you were a much more fun opponent than the AI! [:)]

Rysyonok -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (8/31/2009 9:50:01 PM)

Thanks :)

I'm still deciphering our game to see how come I lost... :)

comte -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/13/2009 10:06:58 AM)

I've been contemplating buying this game is it totally dead? Are there any PBEM opponents out there? Just want to know before I lay down some $$$$

tex -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/13/2009 7:02:44 PM)

There are a few of us having a ball playing the game, and I for one can recommend it if you want a kinder, gentler experience compared to WITP. You don´t have to micromanage everything so much and without airpower dominating the war, the strategy options are much more open.

As for pbem, I am sure there won´t be a problem finding someone, I for one am up for a game [:D]

Rysyonok -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/14/2009 3:39:47 AM)

Tex is a good, deadly opponent ;)

tex -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/14/2009 6:34:15 AM)

Hey Rysyonok, glad to see you have finally made it back! I am tired of playing the AI.

comte -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/15/2009 7:28:47 AM)

I've decided I'm gonna buy this game I'm fascinated by the idea of a Jutland of the Pacific possibly occuring [:)]

tex -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/15/2009 10:49:34 AM)

A finer decision I have never seen [:D] Welcome aboard!

Frandoxxx -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/16/2009 12:11:46 AM)

I bought this game as part of the "Victory At Sea" sale that came out to promote AE.
I LOVE AE and have two PBEM games with it going on. I have done nothing with WPO, from what I have read here, its AI sucks. Too bad, interesting period and a lot of really cool ships.

Connfire -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/17/2009 5:26:32 PM)

IMHO, the AI ranges from mediocre to OK. I mean, after the first few game months it is not exactly thrill-a-minute, but even if you read the AARs, you'll see that a Pacific War covering 1/3 of the earth's surface, involving dreadnoughts, trench warfare, canvas aircraft, and no radar isn't always like that in PBEM, or would have been in real life, either. My biggest complaint about the AI is it seems to run out if initiative after awhile, though it may still pull off a surprise now and then.

You are very right about the cool ships. [8D]

comte -> RE: Anyone still playing this game....... (10/18/2009 7:20:36 AM)

Ok I bought the game tonight [:D]
