For those of you who don't follow my AAR, my opponent Larry and I think this may be an all time classic. Every PT boat skipper has wet dream about this. For the record no hits were scored. I just had to share it for those who may have missed it

Mike Solli -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/6/2008 7:54:43 PM)

Looks to me like there were some hits, just not the way you had hoped. [:'(]

GreasyLake -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/7/2008 2:28:54 AM)

Actually all the action was between CV Hiryu and the PT boat during the Japanese turn. That was what really got me going, my newest carrier was escorting a transport group, and comes close to getting torped!

Ken Estes -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/9/2008 12:36:47 AM)

That's more interesting data for how the surface engagement probability works, as I think the speed differential counts for a lot, and normally a PT could not engage KB, but you are running with a Junyo CV and escorting a convoy, so one or both was a factor in the MTB being able to engage.

dennishe -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/9/2008 1:41:48 AM)

In a game with Iley I bumped into KB with a surface TF including pretty much all OZ cruisers. Didn't manage to hit any CV though. For some reason my ships decided to go for the escorts and only damaged those while they got sunk themselves. KB had to withdraw though. Has anybody ever succeed in sinking a CV by a surface battle?

bobogoboom -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/9/2008 3:23:02 AM)

i almost sunk saratoga with a badly damaged ijn bb against john the 3rd i think it was mutsu. hit it with 2 14inch shells and caused a magazine(if i recall correctly) to go up.

I sunk a Japanese CVL with a couple of 15" hits from HMS Warspite off Colombo in the monsoon season in a night engagement. A second CVL took a single 15" hit as well, but didn't sink.

I even got a screenie.  [:D]

Now this is a screenshot for the ages!

CVs sunk by a BB, especially a British one, is about as sweet as it gets.

...in WitP, anyway.  [;)]

bradfordkay -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/9/2008 7:11:31 AM)

I'll go with the BB sinking the CVL, unless Gem35's GF wants to drop the halter...[;)]

Well I can tell you about it, but maybe I can talk about baseball.[;)]

John Lansford -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/11/2008 4:57:20 PM)

I had the North Carolina run down and sink Junyo in my current game.  It looks nice seeing '16" Gun" beside her name on the sunk screen...

On the other hand, how in the world did you manage to sink Akagi with 500 lb bombs?  The only CV I've sunk with those was Hiyo; the Big Six were all immune to them in this game IIRC. Not IRL, obviously...

Depends on the Mod you are playing...

EDIT: You COULD possibly sink Akagi in standard WITP without penetrating hits...you'd need a whole lot of them though (enough nonpenetrating hits can start fires which can spread...)

Bogo Mil -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/11/2008 5:28:39 PM)

The "sunk by" column sometimes contains jokes. I once had an air attack against a CVL near Java. One Hudson scored a bomb hit, and 5 Dutch planes hit with torpedoes. The ship was eventually listed as "sunk by 250lb-bomb". [:'(]

I've seen Ise sunk by 500lb bomb before now [X(][X(][:D]

Gem35 -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/11/2008 5:52:34 PM)

Robert is correct, I play vanilla WitP stock scenario 15 and iirc, my land based heavies put quite a few torps in her and she limped away and was finished off by some dive-bombers from one of my carriers.

True - weird stuff can creep in... there was a thread a while back trying to figure out why the "sunk by" was listed as it was... there was speculation that it was the weapon that caused the most damage, or the weapon that hit last... none of it made much sense because someone always found an exception to any proposed "rule" about how it works. Hornblower -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/12/2008 9:34:14 AM)

a while back a USN group of DD's ran into a IJN "transport" group of ak's and DD's..  after action report showed one of the USN DD's hit by a 14" shell.  In truth the ship wasn't even hit, but still odd.  Or a AK on HGH..  Mega Maru..

i've never seen an AAR where the shell size hits were specified, or for that matter size of bombs or torpedoes...

EDIT: Animations show the hit size, but you mention the ship wasn't hit... did you mean animations?

Sometimes "fog of war" hits show up in animations.

It was around Port Moresby. The Aussie Beauforts put around half a dozen torps into her and the USAAF dropped a couple of 500lbers, glory hogs I guess [;)]

It was MacArthur's office that was responsible for this report. Remember, the Aussies didn't contribute to the victory in his eyes...

I sank Yamato and Musashi at Lae using 500lb bombs. I think enough of them must have stacked up on deck to slowly submerge the battleships.

Lucky you. I had similar case but both sides scored hits:

KB vs. PT boat

John Lansford -> RE: A Screen Shot for the Ages (6/16/2008 2:17:36 PM)

This weekend I had a force of light ships (4 Dutch/New Zealand/Aussie CL's, two Detroit class CL's and a Columbia class CL and 7 DD's) I was using to support landings on New Guinea raid Truk to shoot up transports there.  I had seen a Surface Warfare TF heading into port also but reports indicated it was a CA and some other ships.

It wasn't.  Besides the CA, both Nagato and Haruna were in there, plus Oi.

When I saw the battle screen, I began planning to restart the turn since I was about to lose the entire TF.  They had other ideas...

First round: 5000 yards.  A Dutch and New Zealand CL each torpedo Haruna, as well as pour 6" shells into her.  Le Fantastique applies the coup de grace with THREE torpedo hits on the battleship, which promptly sinks.  Other ships join in the fun and shoot up a couple of the destroyers.

Second round:  2000 yards.  Here's where the TF commander gets greedy.  He closes the range even though Nagato and Chokai and Oi are still basically unhurt (6" shells bounced off both the CA and Nagato).  The USN DD's torpedo Chokai and a destroyer, but don't sink either one.  Nagato RAVAGES Leander with 10 16" shells, and she sinks.  Torpedoes slam into Richmond and Tromp, but neither sink.  Le Fantastique's crew, still celebrating their sinking of Haruna, is shot up by one of the destroyers and Oi, losing a turret and suffering serious hull damage.  Her 5.5" guns return the favor on Oi, though, leaving her burning brightly.

Third round: 9000 yards.  The TF commander retreats at full speed, not quite fast enough.  Nagato gets a couple more hits on Detroit and Richmond, while Columbia finally gets into the act and blasts Chokai, Oi and a destroyer with 6" shells.

All the ships successfully made it to the Admiralty Islands, where I've got a forward base set up and lots of CAP.  Detroit and Le Fantastique are the worst off, but I think both will survive, but they'll be in drydock for a long, long time.  The IJN TF, however, retreated north out of Truk the next day, right into range of a 3 CV TF I had raiding Woleai.  Both Oi and Nagato were torpedoed and sunk, and Chokai hammered badly with 1000 lb AP bombs.

I decided to not restart the turn; the surviving crew of the Le Fantastique will be getting some accolades once they reach San Francisco, I think...
