Yes, the AI in WBTS is quite good overall.

PyleDriver -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/15/2008 11:40:15 PM)

We worked on the AI alot, sending saves to Gary for improvement and it is one tough AI to win agianst...

Grotius -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/16/2008 12:47:10 AM)

It's beating me handily on "Normal" level in my first game, but then I don't really know what I'm doing yet. :)

jcjordan -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/16/2008 6:36:58 AM)

Well in my learning curve game vs the Confed AI on Easy, it seems to have a propensity to make both kinds of artillery & fortify in place making it a lot like WW1 trench warfare but most of my leaders never had initiative, allowing this to happen. For some reason, I've not been able to do a amphib even though all seems to be in place to be able to do one but I'm sure I'm missing something just don't know what [&:].

dpazuk -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/16/2008 7:59:38 AM)

I am playing my first game on 'normal' difficulty vs Confederacy AI, with the computer handling production.

So far the AI is doing a great job. It has fortified the coastal areas with heavy artillery and I had my butt handed to me when I attempted a naval bombardment of Mobile. I lost 3 ironclads!

New Orleans is going to be quite the handful, if I ever get around to invading it.

So far I have been limited in where I can invade along the coast due to movement restrictions. For example, I cannot reach the first coastal island and can only reach as far as Norfolk.

I must be doing something wrong? AC leader limiting my range of movement?

It sounds like you need to adjust your naval transports. Remember, that you need alot enough transport capacity along the entire route AND enough amph landing capacity where you want to invade so you need more transport units at the end of the chain.

ratters72 -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/16/2008 11:41:19 AM)

Yea as Jan said, that vital second number showing how many units can land is the key.

On the AI, I reiteriate the above comments on the AI.  I'm in a similar position to dpazuk.  The reb AI is doing a great job of cul-de-sac'ing me, covering gaps and tranferring men around.  At times I swear they know what I'm thinking (still, I do expect to break out of Bowling Green tonight, and here we come Tennessee!!) Famous last words.

So yea, to anyone that loves strategy games and wants a good AI challenge, so far (I am going off mere days and as only playing as the union), the AI seems to be more then an admirable opponent.

TheTomDude -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/16/2008 2:38:53 PM)

I think the AI is quite challanging. I tried both sides and got kicked in the butt by the AI on normal. Very nice. I like that game. Very addictive and very well done. I like the tutorial vids. *thumbs-up*
Always wanted to have such a challanging AI in WitP, but.....maybe.....with WitP AE.... [;)]

Yeah, I figured that out last night after a review of the amphibious operations tutorial. I had all of these transports sitting along the eastern seaboard port cities [sm=Christo_pull_hair.gif]

BTW, kudos to Matrix and company for a job well done on the tutorials!

Another note on the AI behaviour: I have only witnessed one dumb move on the part of the AI in my game: it actually attempted to attack Washington with a token force, only to be soundly rebuffed. I don't know what it was thinking, as I do not attempt to purposely 'hide' formations. I want a show of force in Washington to pin as many of their forces in the East as possible.

Mind you, I was making a push in the West, having captured Paducha and Bowling Green, so it could have been a feint on the part of the AI to keep me honest out east and ensuring that I keep more troops along the eastern seaboard, rather then shipping them out West.

The AI can't be that forward thinking can it? [X(]

Grotius -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/17/2008 3:13:20 AM)

I'm pretty impressed with the Union AI so far. I'm in August 1862 and Grant has pushed to the outskirts of Vicksburg in the West, while McLellan and Sherman have pushed to the gates of Richmond in the east. Admittedly, I've made some newbie errors, but it's nice to see an aggressive AI for a change. Here's a look at a recent map of the western theater. I'm falling back from Nashville and trying to reform a line south from Memphis to Vicksburg.

oldspec4 -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/17/2008 4:15:17 AM)

Grotius,

Your screenshot looks similar to mine playing as Confererate. The Union AI is very good at comin' down the Mississippi river and splitting the Memphis and Nashville force. I'm trying to form a line like you at Jackson and Vicksburg. My other line is Chattanooga/Knoxville. Have only played at normal since I got the game and am still having a problem winning battles.

Grotius -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/17/2008 5:48:15 AM)

I am playing only at Normal too. I'll ramp up to the highest difficulty level for my next game. I did finally manage to win two strategic victories in a row in the east, so the political point score is now roughly even, but the map sure looks bad for my side. :)

PyleDriver -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/17/2008 5:55:14 AM)

What side you playing Grotius? 1000 is the magic number for the Union. If you want to go up in AI, I would try one level at a time. Sounds like your picking up the game well, fun huh...

Grotius -> RE: Plz more about AI enemy.. (6/17/2008 7:43:29 PM)

I'm playing the CSA side against the Union AI. In the screenshot above, it's the AI that has plunged south.

Right now we're both around 860 political points, but it's only August 1862.

I'm quite pleased with the AI so far, and I'm only playing on Normal. I like a challenge, so I hope I lose, and I look forward to increasing the difficulty level. Oldspec4's comment makes me wonder if the AI does the same thing in every game. But I won't have to worry about that for my next game, as I'll be playing the Union.
