tran505 -> Tactical Move Gets Disabled (6/17/2008 12:18:21 AM)

I was playng yesterday evening -- April 1862. All my armies were active, yet I could not get any units to switch to tactical movement mode. Then I noticed that the two buttons on the upper right hand side (having to do with movement modes) were acting strangely. They would flicker when I moused over them, but would not accept any input. I thought it must be some movement rule I hadn't learned yeat, so I went to the next turn -- same thing. Nobody (not even active units) would switch to tactical movement mode. Soooo, I saved the game, exited the game, and then re-entered game and reloaded my game-in-progress. Problem fixed.

I don't know how often this happens -- I have not played enough yet, but it appears there is some sort of intermittant glitch (I really hated these when I used to write software) that prevents using tactical movement. I will let you know if I can glean anymore useful info -- assuming it happens again.

Regards,

Paul

Just a follow-up. The "stuck strategic move" button problem happened again yesterday evening. It occurred at the top of the turn, when control came back to me after the AI move. When I save the game, exit the program, and re-enter / reload, the program is reset and functions properly. When the problem manifests itself, no units can use tactical movement, and the two buttons controlling this (upper right part of the screen) are essentially jammed.

Thanks,

- Paul

Okay. I think I figured it out last night. When I have the game running (in full screen mode), I also had the manual up in a separate window, and music runnig in a separate window. I would CNTRL-ALT-DEL out of the program and activate one of the other processes when I wanted to reference the manual or fiddle with the CD that was playing. When I resume the game process, the game program has the strategic movement button locked down. Near as I can tell, the only way to get tactical movement back is to exit the program and restart/reload. At least on my system the problem is 100% reproducible.

Obviously now that I know what is going on, I can work around it. Kind of a weird side-effect, though.

Regards,

Paul

That is weird, however we advise all players not to Ctrl-Alt-Del out of the game as it will cause problems. We suggest Windowed Mode for anyone that wants to do more than play the game (as for myself, I always play in windowed mode).

Yup, just had this problem myself-- I've been running full-screen, flipping back and forth, never had a problem before tonight.  Grrr.

Please fix this!

In the meantime. . . guess I'm restartin'! ;-)

Paul, I had the same problem yesterday. I think I was also at full screen and know that I had other windows open, including the manual. I think we see a pattern emerging here.

No, wait, that was just my dementia. [:'(] Sorry.

Over the long years of playing computer games in a windows OS's I have never had more than one window open. I think no matter what kind of system you have running a game in full screen, with music and the manual all at the same time is asking for trouble but what do I know I am just a computer user not a person with great amounts of computer knowledge. Multitasking is something you should be able to do but is not a perfect process.
With a game like this I don't have the sound or music on because it bothers me LOL.

I had always done process switches with CTRL-ALT-DEL. When you do it that way, the "struck button" problem shows up each and every time. The comment about "ALT-TAB" was a revelation! The problem NEVER happens when you use "ALT-TAB".

Doctor! Doctor! It hurts when I do "this" [sm=00000028.gif]

You know the rest....
