Valkyrie -> Matrix Games & Vista (6/26/2008 1:22:37 AM)

Can anyone provide a list of which Matrix games will run under Vista 64 bit Ultimate?

I'm building a new quad core PC and have to decide between buying a 64 bit XP license before it goes off retail sale in a couple of days or to just go with Vista.

I know the newer titles are Vista compatible, but what about the rest?

Thanks for your help and advice!

Get the XP while you can. Trust me on that one

Greybriar -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (6/26/2008 4:56:01 AM)

From what I've read on the forums I visit, there are a lot fewer problems with the 32 bit Vista than there are with the 64 bit Vista.

V22 Osprey -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (6/26/2008 5:20:43 AM)

Because alot of games can't really support it.VISTA it self already bad,but 64 bit VISTA is just pushing it....

I have 64 bit on my mom's computer,I can't use the Editor for alot of my games.

Thanks guys... I just ordered XP from NewEgg to lock in my options.

SPWaW, Forge of Freedom, AT, CCMT, Carriers at War, Gates of Troy, WaWWD, TOAW 3 all work fine. For Liberty has problems, but it doesn't like Vista 32 bit either. On a side note every other game I have bought in the last year works fine with Vista 64. You really only have problems when the game was coded in 16 bit.

Valkyrie,

In my experience, 64-bit XP is likely to have more compatibility issues than 64-bit Vista, but YMMV. 32-bit XP is the compatibility gold standard and 32-bit Vista seems compatible with pretty much all our games (with use of the compatibility settings for some) as long as the drivers aren't buggy (which quite a few still are). We test with 64-bit Vista Ultimate and have had very few compatibility issues - as noted 16-bit apps will have trouble, but most of the 32-bit and 64-bit seem to work fine.

Sounds like a good reason for keeping my current PC active for gaming.

The deal breaker on the O/S for the new build will be my older versions of Photoshop, Vegas Video and SoundForge since I can't afford to pay their upgrade prices to move up to the new versions. The higher power for the new box is mostly to handle multi-media work.

Time will tell [:)]

the other sage bit of advice my computer best friend told (that I now follow) is Never upgrade any OS till you reach a point where you have to do so. Follow Panzers advice and stick with XP for awhile.. My friend has both a 64 & 32 bit version of XP and the 64 bit version will not not run most 32 bit software it can overwrite certain boot files when trying to boot a 32 bit program even though said program sys it will run on MOST 64 Bit systems.
It took a long time for me to learn that being out there on the cutting edge of computing can be lonely and painful.

one problem early on was that software using open GL would not turn on vista but it was a software issue not an OS issue and many of the companies simply changed there open GL stuff to run on vista at least MOST of the time. I will be interested in what MS says now. Back in about Jan 08 they allowed builders to still sell XP system till Mid year..SO what now is the mighty MS going to do? Stay tunned folks it ain't over till its over LOL

I am always amazed when MS wants us to buy the latest and greatest OS. When sales were slow many game companies still produce games for XP but do you feel that eventually we will all have to buy the latest OS because MS will not support a particular OS any longer. Do you have to do anything different in your game designing to deal with two versions of XP (32&64) and at least 2 versions of Vista (32&64) and soon like in 09(?) a yet new OS from MS. Does it not get a little complicated from your point of view?

It's hard to get to the real facts though as I have discovered as I researched many forums. You get people saying their 64 bit O/S runs everything except software with older 16 bit installation packages and the next person says nothing runs! I'm setting up a dual boot system with XP64 and Ubuntu 64 bit Linux so we'll see what happens. Old system is going to get an upgrade in a couple of months to an AMD 6000 or 6400 X2 running 32 bit windows XP. That should cover all bases.

In my mind what does it matter if MS no longer supports XP? XP has been around long enough that most of the issues have been solved or aren't a big enough deal to be "deal breakers" so to speak. I plan on hanging onto my XP for at least the rest of the decade. However, I was also a very reluctant holdover of Win98 as well, I didn't upgrade to XP until almost 2 years after it was widely made available. My wife would tell you that I just hate change. The only way I will upgrade sooner is if a game comes along that will only play on Vista or whatever the flavor of the moment is. However, it would have to be a game such as WitP that is more or less the Holy Grail to me, otherwise it wouldn't "force" me to make that transition.

panzers -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (7/10/2008 5:05:06 AM)

Just thought of something. I have a question for the matrix staff. When WiF comes out, will xp be compatible for it? I guess that would be something I would ask in the WiF forum but I hope it does because I just spent over $400 to get rid of vista and get my system reconfigured to operate on XP. It would be a shame if it was designed solely for Vista. If that were the case, then, once again I would just have to buy a whole new computer altogether. Seems like I have to do that every year[:(]

dravazed -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (9/19/2008 2:52:05 AM)

Unlike the rest of you, I am like most gamers, inasmuch as I'm not particularly computer savvy--I just want things to work. I have Vista Home Premium, and know there are compatibility issues...when I look at the many games that appeal to me, when I don't see Vista listed as one of the OS's--and it usually isn't--I'm very hesitant to buy. It says something to me that no one from Matrix has produced a list of games that straightforwardly say these are compatible with Vista, these are not, these others we just don't know.

Listing this at the site would be a real services, IMO.

junk2drive -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (9/19/2008 3:04:16 AM)

AIUI you look at the system requirements for each game. If it says Vista, it has been tested on Vista. If not, it either doesn't work or hasn't been tested.

2ndACR -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (9/19/2008 3:07:58 AM)

I am using Vista 64bit Home premier with SP1 and have not had a single issue with any game I have loaded up on it. UFO, WITP, Rome TW etc. Different game makers, dated titles and all have run smoothly on it with no issues.

I bought a Gateway FX4710-UB003A that has the quad core etc and it was right at the same price if I had built it myself (paid someone to do it). Out of the box and it is smooth as silk and have not had a issue yet.

Dennistoun -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (9/19/2008 7:56:24 AM)

I have HP 32-bit Vista and all except CotD have worked perfectly fine when going thru the "Properties-Compatibility" process.

Grell -> RE: Matrix Games & Vista (9/19/2008 6:28:15 PM)

I intend to hold onto my XP system for 2 more years (God willing)and then buy either Vista or a new MS os.

Regards,

Greg
