In the West? I have mine at Cairo at this time, but surely there is a better place?

Saint Louis.

AC's are to be 6 areas from the TC to get the TC bonus for initative! So place them accordingly ... The east is tough since the TC needs to be in Washington. But it is a narrow theater.

If you build a factory in Cairo on the first turn, this will bring it up to a total of 4, for the sum of population plus factories. Then, as the battles move south, moving your TC from St Louis to Cairo is not a problem once it comes on line. This allows you to fully support your AC's all the way down to Natchez, from which both Baton Rouge and New Orleans are within reach.

If you build a factory at Cairo the first turn seems to me it does not activate until March 1862; but I've never tried it so I could be wrong.

If you put the TC in St. Louis and you don't control Missouri as a border state, I wonder if (1) you need to build a supply for any AC in Missouri, and I wonder if (2) you must subtract -2 in calculating TCIB as you would for an enemy area (probably not).

In any event, you could try Springfield Illinois; a TC there will support everything from eastern Missouri through eastern Ohio.

You're correct. I was suggesting this for supporting the drive south in 1862. Unless your Confederate opponent is a complete boob, you shouldn't need anything beyond St Louis, or your own suggestion of Springfield Illinois, before the end of the first winter.

JAMiAM,
yes, good preplanning to have Cairo built up as a base for later operations. [&o]

Hmmmm. I didn't think about improving the real estate to get to the 4 point requirement. I wonder if this could work in Kentucky.... I am still puzzling out the best way to use overland invasion to get to New Orleans and/or Mobile. Six zones doesn't quite make it -- even from Cairo.
