vadersson -> Tactical Naval Games? (7/2/2008 9:05:13 PM)

Hey gang,

A friend that I am playing JT's Campaign Series with PBEM was wondering if there was a Naval equivalent. Ideal I would be interested in a tactical game of naval combat focusing in small fleet (or large fleet I guess) tactics when the shells really start flying. Is there such a game? Most games I see are generally Operational or Strategic in nature. Also I tend to prefer turn based games as they work for PBEM. The historically period is not really a big concern.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Duncan

There was one called Steel someting or other,but it was well buggy.There is Destroyer Command from Ubisoft which can be linked to Silent hunter 2.

There hasn't been a good tactical ship war game sense Action Stations or the old SSI's Great Naval Battle Series.[:(]

Have you tried Uncommon Valor or Harpoon CLassic?

Check out the Naval Warfare section at NWS.
I'm looking forward to SAS Supremacy At Sea.

The best tactical naval game remains, "Join the Navy."

That series was a lot of fun, but I could never get the European campaign to run.

If you are a naval gaming enthusiast, then you should take a look at Distant Guns, and Jutland, by Storm Eagle Studios. Jutland is supposed to be released later this summer. There used to be a trial downoad for Distant Guns-maybe its still available. These games are "real time", but you should take a look-amazing detail.

Fighting Steel, good game.

Doesn't work on XP though. [:(]

After installing the NWS FSP mods to Fighting Steel it worked for me in XP (it may not work for everyone though!). FSP mods also kills the bugs and adds lots of new ships and features.

Eagle Games have certainly put a lot of effort into putting off people buying their games.

Harpoon CE gets my vote.

madgamer2 -> RE: Tactical Naval Games? (7/9/2008 10:51:05 PM)

There was a guy that created a navel ship level game that used the graphic icons used during WW2 on plotting boards on every ship in the fleet. I bought my copy when he was selling them out of his apartment. Later the game was sold by a company called RAW Entertainment. The game was called Action Stations. I still have it on the old 3 1/2" floppy disks. I have been meaning to try installing it and running under DOSbox but can't find the time and it may not even be possible to install on XP Pro. It was a great navel game with lots of different battles from both the Atlantic and pacific.

I still have the Action Stations game on 3 1/2 floppy disks. I was wondering if it is possible to install under XP Pro and run under a program like DOSBox. It sure would be great to play that again. We played one of the night action battles and he being the "I wonder what thnis button does" sort person. Welle ended up turning on his search lights and managed to attract a very large number of Allied torpedo's LOL. For its time it had the AI I have ever played against and still is one of the best even compared to games to day.

Anyone rememver the old PTO games for the super nintendo? I always thought those were some great naval wargames especially from such a simple console. I, to this day, don't have a clue how Koei pulled it off. For that kind of console, that was an extremely complex and detailed video game.

sabre1 -> RE: Tactical Naval Games? (7/10/2008 6:36:34 AM)

Madgamer,

Actions Stations was excellent, too bad there was never anyone to redo that game.

hermanhum -> FW: (7/10/2008 7:50:01 AM)

Gotta agree.  Action Stations was phenomenal.  I almost never won!  [:D]

goodwoodrw -> RE: FW: (7/10/2008 7:59:54 AM)

Yep Action Station one of the best games I have played, but boy was it slow on my old Amiga, watching those torpedoes approaching was like watching paint drying, it was much better on my PC. In fact is was my first PC games on no less than 2 51/4 in discs [:D]

hermanhum -> FW: (7/10/2008 8:05:07 AM)

IMO, one of the greatest aspects of Action Stations was the Fog of War.

If you lost a contact and re-acquired it later in the game, you would get a new ID number with it.  So, you never really knew if it was the same ship over and over or if additional enemy forces were appearing.  (Well, except for the really big capital ships that were more easily identifiable.)

andym -> RE: FW: (7/10/2008 6:47:30 PM)

i used to like 688 Attack Sub on the Sega Megadrive!
