zaxilon -> Installation questions on SPWAW V6.1 (4/3/2002 6:39:46 AM)

I have SPWAW V1.0 installed and have been running it since it first came out. I have a friend who is downloading the complete V6.1 for me. My questions are:

1) Can I install V6.1 over V1.0 directly or should I uninstall V1.0 then install V6.1 in the previously made folder for SPWAW?

2) How much space should I have for the install of V6.1?

3) How much space is required remaining on my drive after install to properly run it?

I will be patching to V7.1 soon since I can download that small patch file, only 2.5MB or so. I have an older machine and it is kind of crowded so I have some space management issues brewing.

Thanks in advance for your help all! :D

Uninstall, version 1.0 Then install 6.1, after it's installed I think it takes about 1gb of HD space once it's extracted. If you have at least 200mb space left for a Windows swap file it should be fine.

gmenfan, are you correct? 1 GB HD space required? I dont have near that on any of my drives. Could you please let me know if this figure is exact? If it is can you tell me what version I can run with only about 600 to 700MB disk space?

Thanks,
Zaxilon :D

Zaxilon, My Spwaw ver 6.1 folder is 720MB. Of that space, the files in the SND (sound) folder take up 380MB. So if you can get it to load, you can go into the sound folder and delete some of the wav files. A lot of these are not necesary for the game, just "ear candy". The problem lies in the fact that you have to have about twice this much space to get the files unzipped and extracted to the HD.
If this is too much, you can probably use ver 4.5. It takes about 538MB after it is loaded. Once you have 4.5 loaded you could probably do upgrades to 6.1, deleting the unnecesary files as you go. Do you have a CD burner? If you have a burner, zip drive or something similar, you could copy all the scenerio files to a disc, and save that space also, just copy a scenerio to the HD when you got ready to play.
I could get you a CD with the 1 thru 4.5 vers on it if you want to try that! We might could copy the game to a CD(ver 6.1 already extracted) and then you could copy them to your HD. Not sure if this will work or not. Maybe someone here could answer that?
Hope this will help,

If you start with the 5.01 internet download you don't have the stereo wav files and that saves you about 300 megs of space. Anyone who uses the 5.3 or 7.0 megacampaign installs get the improved sounds by default. If you want a minimal install just install 5.01, upgrade 5.2, 6.1, 7.0 and 7.1. Then you add campaigns and scenarios until you have reached your size limit.

As SPWAW gets bigger (I too started with v1.0) I just removed other games from the C: drive and reinstalled them on D: or just keep them on backup cds as ghosts, I don't uninstall them, I just delete the directories they are in when I am not playing and reload from image cds when I want to play again.

SPWAW and Halflife are the only games left on my C: drive and halflife's three gigs of addons still dwarfs SPWAW.
thanks, John.

zaxilon -> Thanks for the great ideas ! (4/4/2002 1:54:14 PM)

Thanks all for the great ideas. :D I am not going to get the mega campaigns until later. Money is a problem right now so I am mega tightwad if you know what I mean. I friend just downloaded from the Armor site three files to get to V6.1 and burned them to a CD for me. IIRC, they were V5.01 complete, V5.01 to V5.2 update, then V6.1 update. Hope this is all I need to get V6.1 running. I can patch to V7.1 as stated in above replies. I still have a lot of disk space managment work to do. Got to do the bigshuffle to get it going. I think I can do with only the standard sounds. I am currently running V1.0 and it is awesome so if the standard sound is even better in V6.1 than what I am running it will blow my hat off!

Thanks again to all. I really appreciate your input. Guess that is just more reasons why I like SPWAW. The people here really jump in and help each other out when some of us get stuck. :D

Later,
Zaxilon :D

Once you get up and running with 6.1 and then patch to 7.1 let us know how much more you like it over the original version of 1.0. Hurry back soon.
