Right 1 quiz remaining:

No.5

1. I do not have my own counter
2. I did survive the war - sort of.....
3. I was an Allied ship
4. My generic counter is blue in WIF
5. I "saved" a nation
6. Although my generic counter is blue. It was actually green when built.

2. I did survive the war - sort of.....

Sunk is sunk.

Survived is not sunk.

SS Ohio did not "sort of" survive the war.

After SS Ohio reached Grand Harbour, Malta, the ship broke in two from the damage she had sustained. There were insufficient shipyard facilities to repair the tanker, so the two halves were used for storage, and later barracks facilities for Yugoslavian troops.

Operation Pedestal and SS Ohio save Malta

SS Ohio

Mmmm let me see now. Sunk is, as you say, sunk i.e. below the waves, at the bottom etc etc. However I never said anything about sunk - I never used the word.

You then said "Survived is not sunk". That is correct, I never said she was sunk.

Now what did I say? "I did survive the war - sort of....."

What does that mean? Well, because of the damage sustained she broke in two, BUT, and here's the BUT, the two halves were used for storge and later for use as barracks facilities.

So, as you can see, she did "sort of" survive. Not in one piece, granted, but then I never said she did - I said "sort of..." i.e. she was not sunk, she was not scrapped, hell, she was not even in one piece, but you cannot deny she did survive -"sort of" and put to use.

ezzler -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (9/12/2012 11:37:03 PM)

In my first job I worked with a guy who was an AA gunner on HMS Penn. Penn took Ohio into the harbour. He said they fired of every round of 20mm. They never used the gunsight. Just blazed into the air and hoped it would frighten the Stukas away.

He had some photos of Malta with all the wrecks in it. Saw a lot of action for a destroyer escort did Penn.

MERCHANT NAVY NOSTALGIA TANKERS

"Perhaps the most famous American oil tanker of all time was the 19-knot OHIO, completed in 1940 for Texaco and part of the famous Operation 'Pedestal' convoy which was formed to relieve Malta in 1942.. Though badly damaged by repeated air attacks, the injured vessel managed to safely deliver 14,000 tons of petrol to Allied forces before sinking to the bottom of Malta's Grand Harbour."

To survive WW2 the SS Ohio would have had to sail again. She didn't.

The use as an oil storage device or a barracks or does not constitute survival of a ship.

HMS Breconshire

Did the HMS Breconshire "Sort of survive" also? She was refloated and then scrapped in 1954.

06/30/42 21:50 Matla

SS King of England escorted by ML-462 proceeded to Marsaxlokk, Malta. King of England pumped 100 tons of fuel oil from Auxiliary Supply Ship HMS Breconshire (9,776 tons) during the night.

I fear you are taking what was a bit of fun cryptic clue all a little too seriously [:)]

"To survive WW2 the SS Ohio would have had to sail again"

Says who? Is that the law? She wouldn't necessarily have HAD to sail again. She could have been raised and turned straight into a museum ship or a floating barracks for example.

By your definition did the battleship Marat not survive then? She too sunk (having had her front end completely torn off) but was used as a floating gun battery during the siege of Leningrad (during which she is referred to as... Marat!). She never (to my knowledge) ever sailed under her own steam again, but remained in service as a stationary training ship (as the Volkhov) until 1953.

I said, and I repeat "Ohio survived...sort of" i.e. she was used afterwards - albeit not as a tanker hence "sort of" and not just survived (which she obviously didn't).

Did Breconshire survive? No of course not - she was raised 8 years after the war and then scrapped.

paulderynck -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (9/14/2012 2:28:55 AM)

Sunk is sunk?

"Here is what happened to each of the eight battleships during and after the attack: Pennsylvania was in dry dock when the attack began and suffered only superficial damage caused when a destroyer in the same dry dock exploded. (Sinking a capital ship in dry dock is physically impossible, even if the dry dock is flooded.) Maryland was also lightly damaged. Both ships were seaworthy later that month. Tennessee suffered more damage, but was seaworthy early in 1942. California and West Virginia were torpedoed and settled onto the bottom of the harbor, their main decks well above water. If they had suffered the same damage at sea, they would have been sunk, but the shallowness of the harbor saved them — illustrating the foolishness of attacking ships in port. Both were repaired, with many improvements, and went to sea again. Nevada was the only battleship in motion during the attack. Her crew ran her aground to prevent sinking. Oklahoma capsized, and the forward magazine of Arizona exploded. These are the two battleships that actually were lost in action. Visitors to the Arizona memorial see nothing above water, but that is because the Navy removed the ship’s superstructures, guns and turrets, which would otherwise be mostly above water today."

Breconshire served as oil storage the same as Ohio.

Breconshire was raised but not Ohio.

Did the bow or the stern of Ohio "sort of survive"?

Yours is a poor clue and very missleading.

Hulk:
1: A ship, often an old ship or one that has become obsolete or uneconomical to operate, that has had its rigging or internal equipment removed and is incapable of going to sea, but that is afloat and continues to serve a useful function, such as providing living, office, training, storage, or prison space.
2: To convert a ship into such a hulk.
3: Less commonly, a ship that has been launched but not completed.
4: Also less commonly, an abandoned wreck or shell of a ship.

Ohio was a hulk, an abandoned wreck or shell of a ship.

warspite1

You seem to be moving the goalposts here.

You started with "sunk is sunk" (not so where re-floated e.g. Conte Di Cavour), "to survive you HAVE to be able to sail under your own steam" (not so re Volkhov ex-Marat) and have now moved on to "being classified as a hulk means you no longer "survive"".

You state Ohio was a hulk and that explains why my clue was poor and very missleading (sic).

But really, if a vessel becomes a hulk - e.g. a nineteenth century prison ship for example - would it be correct to say that the ship no longer survives (from the date she became such)?.

No, because that would suggest she was properly sunk or scrapped. In this example the ship does survive - albeit as a prison ship not a man-of-war.

I refer once again to my use of "sort of" in phrasing the clue. To read "I survived...sort of" what does that say to the reader?

Orm -> RE: OT - WWII quiz (9/15/2012 9:50:24 PM)

My turn to deliver five quizzes.

No. 1
1) I am part of a counter.
2) I was lost during my only combat mission.

No. 2
1) We have our own counters.
2) Some claimed that we had a 'zone of control'.

No. 3
1) I have my own counter.
2) My fate shocked a whole nation.

No. 4
1) I do not have my own counter.
2) I am a flagship.

No. 5
1) I have my own counter.
2) I am the eighth ship with this name in my Navy but some might claim that I should be counted as the ninth.

Please beware that I might not use the correct wording in my clues and that I might even have the facts wrong. I am no expert in this and I just do it for fun.

I was guilty of being slow [8|]. I changed my mind because I remembered (from my write-ups) that Wasp took part in the reinforcement of Malta with aircraft - and could not think of why Wasp would have RAF aircraft aboard.

With that tonnage it must be a midget sub then. There were two winners I think for the attack on Tirpitz and one (or two) for the sinking of a Japanese cruiser. As I have no idea of the designation of the latter, I will go for X5, X6 and X7.
