jsglenn4 -> Vista Issue? (7/14/2008 1:21:04 AM)

I just had to reformat my drive and re-install WitP. I'm running v1.806... CHS+NikMod Scenario 157... AB's extended map. Install went off without a hitch. However, when I begin to play my first turn as Allies (vs AI), the game will simply stop with a rather useless message from the OS, "WitP has stopped working and will now close."

Question 1) Is there anything that can be done to generate a more useful error message?

Question 2) Has anyone else run into anything like this before?

Error messages are generated by either Windows (not modifiable) or generally rather nonspecific number message (in case of fatal errors)... non-fatal errors usually give a slightly more specific message (i.e. - "Screen Mode Can not be set").

The one you describe sounds sort of like this is a Windows message, however, i've not heard of this one before so i can't be sure.

One thing you might try, right click on the shortcut icon on the desktop and tell it to run as administrator. I'm thinking that the program can't create or modify the results files because it does not have permission to do so. I am soooooooooooooooooooo glad to not have Vista. [8D]

Thanks for the reponses guys. I think I figured it out.

I'd never had an issue before and couldn't imagine a clean format would introduce a problem so I uninstalled and went step by step through the process again. Embarrassingly, I believe I forgot to install the CHS base package the first time and skipped to the update. Second time around, I got things right and I've not had a problem yet. Not definitive, but it looks like an ID10T error.

The frustrating part was the darn vagueness of the OS message.

Thanks again.

It looks like a lot of us did the same. I bought as good a machine as I could, I hope it will be enough for 5-6 years.

Yeah - gotta learn how to use LINUX... the reason to keep with Microsoft decreases drastically since they don't seem to be too concerned about backwards compatibility.

To be honest, since most programs are now vista compatible I now actually LIKE running vista on my (brand new)machine.....
