TheOx -> Logistics/Troop & Aircraft Movement HELP! (7/14/2008 3:04:44 AM)

Sorry, brand new player here, need a little guidance on a few topics.

Logistics

1) Ok, I am going on the "hub" theory of logistics that I read about elsewhre. Load up supplies and fuel from San Fran move it to Pearl, and then send it out from Pearl to my hotspot bases. Sound good so far?

2) To that effect I have created 4 TFs from San Fran of roughly 21 ships each DDs, TKs, and AKs. Set 2 to load supplies and 2 to load fuel, delivering to Pearl. Does this sound kosher?

3) Do I need to take oil anywhere or is that just used in production in San Fran?

Air and Land Transport

1) Ok tried to move my bomber type aircraft out of the Phillipines to avoid their destruction. Can't seem to transfer to DEI bases at all, only PI bases. Why is this?

2) Tries to load troops in the Southern PI to take to Clark, Manila, and Bataan to try and hold the Japs. Formed 2 AK transport TF and hit "load troops" button. No units listed despite their being a PI and a base defense force in the hex. Why can't I move these guys? My transport number seems high enough!

Ok, thats all I got for tonight, I'm certain to be back tomorrow though!

Before you can transfer AFEEs units out of certain ares you must change their HQ to another HQ like Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific, South Pacific or ABDA-but this costs political points.  AFEE, ABDA, Austrialia, New Zealand will not leave their area as lomng as they are assigned to that HQ.

Depends on what you want to accomplish.

Only place you might want to take oil as the Allies is Australia

See Restricted HQ's ....may not be in the rule book clearly but they're assigned to a restricted HQ. Change to a non restricted HQ.

So in the case of the troops, I can't even transport them around the PI without changing their HQ? Will try to change the HQ with the aircraft, thanks for the tip.

1) Also, can I get some pros and cons about my logistics scheme?

2)If my objective is as stated (San Fran--->Pearl--->Hubs(Fiji, Wake, etc)---->Hotspots) does my current setup look good to achieve that goal?

I think the best approach to supply is what you are comfortable with. As you set tactical and strategic objectives, your supply needs will become apparent. And you wont have enough!!! I know one player that likes to send huge convoys of supplies. I dont, because I expect the worst to happen (running into the KB).Once you decide where your thrust will be then you start collecting supplies and troops at a logical base to support the invasion. As the allies I think you have to plan two or three separate campaigns to keep your foe on his toes. YMMV

That'll work - regardless of where you'll be operating, you'll want to pull supplies/fuel from the West Coast to Hawaii. Then distribute as necessary - if you're playing against AI, you'll probably want to route convoys to Noumea/Australia/New Zealand.

John Lansford -> RE: Logistics/Troop & Aircraft Movement HELP! (7/14/2008 3:02:11 PM)

I set up a major transfer point at Pearl Harbor, and use Baker Island, Johnston Island, and the island SE of Hawaii whose name escapes me right now as refueling stations for TF's headed for the South Pacific and SW Pacific theaters.  They've got enough supplies and fuel to refuel TF's and send them on their way without having to stop at Pearl.

Maloelap and Mili are used as rear supply bases for Central Pacific, Noumea, Luganville and Lunda for the South Pacific and SW Pacific.  Cairns and Darwin serve the same purpose for my advance north out of Australia.  Then I have TF's running supplies/men/fuel from those locations up to the front lines.

LargeSlowTarget -> RE: Logistics/Troop & Aircraft Movement HELP! (7/14/2008 4:06:33 PM)

I play the CHS mod, which has a wider variety of ship classes than the stock scenarios, which in turn makes things both more complex and more flexible - but the general idea rests the same for stock scenarios. I try to keep conyoy routes well to the 'lee side' of the Pearl-Johnston-Palmyra-Canton-Pago-Pago line, in order to escape KB raids against unprotected convoys as well as surface raiders and subs , hoping that the island chain acts as kind of barrier with patrol planes providing eary warning. Therefore I do not use Pearl as transfer point for southbound traffic, but only as local hub.   I use short-ranged medium-sized AKs and TKs to supply CentPac hub Pearl and NorthPac hub Anchorage. Medium-ranged ships stockpile the South Pacific hub at Pago-Pago directly from West coast ports. Those runs usually are escorted by at least one warship for symbolic protection. The long-ranged ships run stuff to the SWPac hub at Sydney, unescorted and thus for safety reasons routed far to the South via Bora-Bora, which is being developed as a refueling point asap (on turn 1, I send all AOs to Bora and the first Eng unit available is sent there as well to built up the port). Outbound convoys fuel at Bora-Bora, then make the round-trip Bora-Australia, do NOT refuel when returning to Bora and are sent back to SF, where they arrive with almost the last drop of fuel. The handful of longest ranged ships are employed on a direct Panama-Australia run without refueling stop.Small short-ranged AKs and TKs forward supplies and fuel from those four hubs in small escorted convoys to the front bases in each area.  In the Indian Ocean, I keep only a few dozen British ships of the short- and medium ranged classes for the Aden-Colombo and Aden-Karachi shuttle, as well as a few long-ranged AKs and TKs for single-ship runs between Aden and Perth for supplies, fuel and oil. The bulk of British shipping and all non-British ships in the India area as well as the survivors of the SRA delaying actions are withdrawn to Australia, taking ressources and oil from the SRA (and remnants of Dutch and CW land and air forces) with them when possible. Eventually they will provide shipping for the Australia-PNG-Solomons area (short-legged ships) or reinforce the West Coast - Hubs convoys (medium/long-ranged ships).  IMO the most difficult task in the beginning is proving fuel to Australia - the few large tankers are sent there immediately, but it takes two months to get there...

bradfordkay -> RE: Logistics/Troop & Aircraft Movement HELP! (7/14/2008 9:03:45 PM)

As far as oil is concerned, LA seems to have a surplus, while Seattle and San Francisco don't always have enough. I oftenwill ship resources from Portland to LA and oil from LA to Seattle or SF in order to give my industrial production a boost.
