Landser44 -> Graphics Question for you mod savvy folks (7/14/2008 11:42:15 PM)

Hi,

I was wondering, how does the engine determine which "on screen 3d unit" to use for a given scenario? I would think that if a condition is met like, say "snow on the ground" or soemthing, it changes the unit graphic to the snow camo? What about the other "time" related changes? Like, if early war, it uses grey painjob on German AFV's and "late war" it uses the "dunkelgelb". I noticed some of the units in 1.03 have camoflauge and foliage. How are these determined? Please forgive my ignaorance here, but I am trying to learn more so that I might get involved in modding this excellent game.

Also, I am curious about the sound files. If there is a thread about modding sound can anybody direct me in that direction?

Thanks!

Landser44

3D graphics can have 4 styles - default, Early, Late, and Snow. Depending on the date and weather conditions the game knows which one to pull up for any certain vehicle.

Each game has a subfolder called "Special" that contains the E(arly) L(ate) and S(now) .bmp versions of various units.

The Standard (default) .bmp version resides in the root folder of each game. If the E, L, or S version doesn't exist, the default version is played.

Example of a personal mini-mod:
I don't like the stock snow vehicles so I move all the S-UpXXXX.bmp files out of the "Special" folder. That way the game will instead call the non-snow default 3D graphic from the root folder.

To find how many different types of Pz VIE's you have for East Front, search your "East Front" folder for UP01019.

Unfortunately, I've found out, through trying to make Special graphics for the Hungarians, that only Germans can have the Late etc, Hungarians can't, I wanted to have vehicles with the different insignia later on, but no go. Do a test if messing with these, to see if they work, snow will work for a few countries, but Early Late etc. are specialty, late is in 1944 I think, can't remember now though, may be sometime late '43. Historically the Germans used the later camo beginning in February of 1943.
