Landser44 -> Multiple Intallation? (7/19/2008 6:26:39 PM)

OK, I am working on my WW1 Mod now and learning as I go(dangerous eh? - See WW1 mod thread) I am curious, Does installing a second copy of the game to a new location, ie, C:/Matrix Games/"Greatwar" (or something) mess up the game? Do the file names need to be their default format for the program to work? I don't know enough about the engine yet.

In other words, when you make a mod, do you have to run it OR the original version? Or can you install it twice, naming it something else the second time and run THAT .exe whne you want to play the mod?[&:]

Thank you to all who have been helpng me with my questions BTW!

Jason posted somewhere how to have two installs for 1.03 and 1.02b maybe over at theblitz.

Basically you need the standard install for the serial number key to work then copy and paste that for the second location to mod.

I'll keep looking for the post.

Normal mods I use JSGME but you have a bigger situation.

Also,  what is the best possible way to install two version of JTCS on the same computer?

Install  the pre-updated version:
.../Matrix Games/MCS_102/
Then create a new folder:
...Matrix Games/MCS_103/
Copy the contents from MCS_102 to MCS_103
Install the 1.02 UPDATE and the 1.02b Patch to the MCS_102 folder.
Install the 1.03 UPDATE to the MCS_103 folder.
This way they are still using the one SERIAL number and there shouldn't be any registry issues.
I have the same set up on mine, although my folders are MCS_BOX and MCS_BETA.

I can't remember the way Jason described his method, but I have several different installations on my computer. I always start with my stock installation (the folder named John Tiller's Campaign Series), copy and paste it in the same "Matrix Games" folder and then rename it for my mod. Then, as you said, go in and start the copy with that .exe file. I usually send a shortcut to the desktop and rename it so I know which is the mod.

Landser44 -> RE: Multiple Intallation? (7/20/2008 7:04:22 AM)

I played with it tonight and I found that if you re-install the game using the install file, and remember to change the path to the game (In this case, I used C:/Matrix Games/The Greatwar) and then remembered to change the shortcut for the exe icon to read "JTCS WW1", it seems to run fine. I am only modding WF, but I suppose that I can get there this way until I figure out something better and maybe down the road remove some of the unnecessary files (those for EF and RS as they just take up space)

I think this works because from a registry standpoint, it is a totally new program.

So far so good. It works and I have a base to start making changes.
