So I thought I would try something different... I put one AC in paducah, and the other 3 I used for naval attacks from savannah, jacksonville, and near mobile.. I found the computer AI completely incapable of reacting to this. They left teh vast majority of their forces idle in virginia and humbolt while i literally captured all of florida, alabama, georgia, south carolina, and louisiana by mid 1863. I was able to tear through vast stretches of the confederacy with cavalry units who encountered little to no resistance. This allowed me to surround the port cities, starve them out, and then capture vast armies.

Pretty effective strategy for anyone having trouble :]

I assume that "naval attacks" means amphibious landings.  And I assume that's where your cavalry started their "campaigns".  You laid seige to the port cities with cavalry and then headed inland after the seiges were successfully concluded.  Was that how it happened?  Just curious.

Indeed, any moves that are outside of the normal are likely to throw even a very good AI. That's why if you want challenge you should PBEM.

AI is only useful if you want to learn the basisc IMHO.

It kinda all comes down to what you consider to be "fun". For me, I like fighting the AI from within the context of historical reason -- something the AI is prepared to take on. In exchange, I get a pretty decent fight, especially in '62, and I am having a blast. If things get too easy, I am starting to ratchet up the the difficultiy level beyond "normal". I really really like being able to set the difficulty parameters directly, instead of using the canned sttings. Right now I am somewhere between "normal" and "challenging" and still having a blast.

Personally, I think the AI undervalues the trans-mississippi no matter what side it is playing. When the AI is CSA -- it simply leaves! Yes this makes for a tougher fight in Tennessee (which the AI does well) but I think it is a net negative overall. When the AI plays USA -- well I have read the stories in the forum about the CSA taking Missouri.

But, am I having fun? You bet!!

I guess I could be more specific.  I landed units near savannah and mobile, and in jacksonville.  Maybe 40-60 infantry each.  Because the AI tends to stack important cities, I was able to use cavalry to capture surroundng territories that were undefended or lightly defended.  This resulted in isolated pockets of confederates completely surrounded by captured territory.  "overrun attacks" are particularly useful for preventing reaction forces from reacting into lightly held territories.  Wait a few turns for those heavily fortified and manned port cities to run out of supply, attack and capture/kill all their leaders and men.  The southeast is very vulnerable to this sort of strategy because there arent chokepoints like in the east and west.  The AI also leaves massive forces in the richmond and paducah area, so you can easily overwhelm them with numbers.  I had so few infantry in washington I had trouble preventing raiders, and yet teh confederates never attacked.  (in fact, throughout the whole game, the confederates only attacked once)

To do that it would seem that you would need super massive forces. Sorry if I'm being a little "dense" here, but more precisely what is involved in easily overwhelming these massive forces?

I may be mistaken, but I think he is referring to the fact that the AI will leave so many units garrisoning Virginia and Paducah that they are spread pretty thin elsewhere on the map. That's where you overwhelm them with numbers. Those massive forces left in Virginia and Paducah will eventually starve as a result as you gobble up the rest of the Confederacy.

except for us who have trouble just getting used to playing the AI. At least I now feel that I could at least try playing a human in WbtS, but unless vast and uncalled for changes are made in AE I will never reach the point of playing a person in WitP. If only for the vast amount of time it takes to play and the difficulty and vast amount of things that must be done EACH turn in that game. Heck the to do each turn list is longer than my monthly food list LOL.

I would like to know your game time table for this type of operation. The union starts with only a couple of cav units and converts 2 per turn. 40pts x three landings=120 pts. How long or in what manor did you get enough navel transport to accomplish this. Did you land them in several waves, at different times, and did it all before the end of 63?
I must be the most hopeless of players because i don't see how given the starting units both navel and land how this could be done in the given time frame, but am sure that Joel or Eric will explain this in words that an old man can understand and PM me to keep me from leaving the forum because I was so embarrassed by my lack of see this thpe of attack as being something in the realm of reality. LOL
