After a lot of fiddling, I finally found out a way to take Manassas (or winchester) on turn 1 about 50% of the time.

Attack Manassas with everyone except hunter.
Convert Pattersons two infantry to cavalry, and pull davies down from Pittsburgh.
Use those cavalry under davies, and hunter to attack winchester.

This way, if Johnston heavily reinforces manassas, you will take winchester. More likely, Johnston will essentially stay put, and you will easily take manassas.

Ta da!

Interesting suggestion - if you want to kick the odds a bit more in your favor, activate a cavalry leader in Washington and bring the Mounted Infantry unit there along to Manassas too and also move your fleet into the Potomac, hopefully getting a ship in support as well.

I just tried it. It worked for me! I lost in Winchester, but I won in Manassas....

Yes, after a bit more testing I found 50% is probably a bit high.  Its more like 30%, the main problem being McDowell not activating enough troops.

I'll have to try it, but the cost is high. You need the 2 cavalry conversions to take W Virginia and Missouri on turn 1. Both are 100% certain if you do them.

Yeah, there's a huge opportunity cost to this strategy, but it is interesting.
