Lefty -> Ron Negray and why can't I lose? (8/4/2008 11:57:56 PM)

I just finished my 1953 season and my team won the pennant again...ho, hum. I manage the Cinncinati Reds. I started this draft league with the 1947 season and after a mediorce first season, I have won the pennant every season and have won 4 straight World Series. I will be playing in the 1953 World Series, and for the 4th straight season I will be playing against the Cleveland Indians. Why is this happening??? I have finances on. I love playing this game but it is just not very challenging. I cannot be that good...something must be wrong. And why does Cleveland keep winning the AL pennant??? Does anyone have any ideas???

Ron Negray spent the season in my minor leagues. I brought him up when the rosters expanded. Negray has a 100 (out of 100) velocity rating. I gave him 4 starts in Septemeber. In his first start, he struck out 24 batters and got a win. In his 2nd start he fanned only 10 in 4 innings, but reliever Hersh Freeman (velocity 90) fanned 12 in 4.2 innings. In Negray's next start he fanned 26 and threw 209 pitches. In his final start, he fanned 27. Every out was a strikeout. He threw 169 pitches. Interesting....

I won the '53 series also.

How come no one has any comments on this???

Lefty, I suppose you are simming all your games? It is really a different experience if you manage each of your team's games. In the day to day game, you go through the gamut of emotions, especially if you choose a rebuilding team.

As for your association, what the heck happened to the NY teams that dominated that era? The Yankees, Dodgers and Giants? Apart from finances on, what settings are you using? Real players, real parks? What roster size?

Ah, a draft league. There you go. Try it with historical rosters, early entry off. It will be MUCH more difficult.

I've managed every one of my team's games in the 7 years of my association.

I'm using real players, real parks, 50 man roster size...

I am doing an association starting in 1978, 60 man rosters, early entry on. I also dump all players into the draft, though. I am 10 over, but am about 10 games out of first with a month to play. I have never tried a full season with historical rosters.

KG Erwin -> RE: Ron Negray and why can't I lose? (8/6/2008 10:01:24 PM)

Lefty, I admire your success, but something's gotta be askew. Those crazy K ratios are the giveaway. Can you post a screenshot of your current roster?

Going with 50-man rosters in 1947 means a lot of fictionals in the initial startup, and there ARE issues with the AI GMs sometimes picking fictionals over real players.

Also, do you use any house rules such as restricting yourself to player-for-player trades, i.e., no 3 for 1s or 4 for 2s?

What version of the game did you start your association with? Are you using 1.72 now?

For comparison's sake, I looked over the pitchers in my 40-man-roster 2001 season, started with 1.72. Only ONE guy (Randy Johnson, no surprise) has a VEL of 100. 5 others have VEL ratings of 90 or above (Tom Gordon, Dan Plesac, Billy Wagner, Octavio Dotel and Ugueth Urbina).

Personally, I think going with 50 men may have skewed the ratings.

cdvalenta -> RE: Ron Negray and why can't I lose? (8/7/2008 1:11:32 PM)

Even with the ratings skewed there is something else going on here. I have experimented with creating a pitcher with all 100's across the board just to see what would happen. While he performed great it was still great relative to the other pitchers in the association. To get 24, 26 and 27 strikeouts in a game should be a tip that something is not quite right. Even with 50-man rosters, etc., etc... Something else is going on.

Do you have all the correct patches?

Wrathchild -> RE: Ron Negray and why can't I lose? (8/7/2008 3:15:09 PM)

Wasn't there a problem with one of the patches and using in season ratings changes that caused these kind of inflated numbers?

Wrathchild,
I seem to remember this also, but don't remember how old that patch was.

As far as I know I have used all of the patches when they have come out.  I am curently running v1.72.

I also started an association with the 1969 season a while back using real players.  I did not use the geographical regions thing like I did with the abovementioned association.  I won the WS in '69, finished last in '70, won my division in '71 but lost in the LCS, won the WS in  '72 and finished 1st in '73.  I quit playing before the '73 playoffs because winning became boring.  I thought I must have done something wrong when I set up the league.  That's when I decided to start the '47 association with the geograhical regions thing on.  I chose to manage Cincinnati since their available dollar amount was one of, if not, the lowest.  The first season was a struggle but since then it certainly hasn't been.

Like I said before, I just can't be that good.  What am I missing???[image]http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/micons/m12.gif[/image]

DonBraswell -> RE: Ron Negray and why can't I lose? (8/9/2008 8:15:47 PM)

I completely understand. I try to pick the worst real team I can find. Also I trade off veterans for rookies often. The AI is not as competive as I would like. I think Shaun is working on this aspect of the game. I like to use the St Louis Browns or a team that finnished at the bottom of the standings like the 40's & 50's A's. Wish I could be of more help.

My first suggestion -- stop using a draft league. Take a real roster team, and see what you can with them.  You will learn quickly that you aren't that good. I try to play realistically, and don't use the hit & run too often.

Either you HAVE mastered the game, or your settings are screwed up.
