tran505 -> Leader Overrated? (8/6/2008 2:14:33 AM)

When I play the game against my buddy, I (as USA) find myself having to maintain 5 supply depots in order to maintain the depot initiative modifier after a certain leader is done raiding each turn. I have seen him take out some 60 supplies in a single raid. Who is this mega-cavalry leader? Forrest right? Nope..., how about Van Dorn. Seeing him pound away at my supplies turn after turn despite having a fully staffed Sheridan screening made me wonder just what this guy had done in the real war. I found this:

Early in 1862 he was sent to command in Arkansas in order to get Ben McCulloch and Sterling Price to cooperate. Launching an attack at Pea Ridge, he was repulsed [sm=00000106.gif] after two days of fighting. Ordered east of the Mississippi, he arrived too late to take part in the fighting at Shiloh but participated in the unsuccessful [:@] defense of Corinth, Mississippi. In the summer of 1862 he successfully defended Vicksburg but failed [X(] in his designs on Baton Rouge when the attack under John C. Breckinridge failed [:@]. Another failure [:-] occurred when he attempted to retake Corinth in October 1862. By this time many Southerners were disenchanted [:D] with him, and he was placed in charge of the mounted troops under Pemberton. His raid on Holly Springs, Mississippi, was a major factor in ending Grant's campaign in central Mississippi. Moving his division into middle Tennessee, he was killed on May 7, 1863, by Dr. George B. Peters for attentions paid by the general upon the physician's wife in Spring Hill.

So the guy essentially bumbled around in the West and the Trans-Mississippi for some time until he got himself killed by a civilian. [sm=sterb011.gif]

As I said, seems a bit overated to me. Other opinions? [sm=love0059.gif]

Let's see....he has an attack help modifier of 3, a defense help modifier of 2, an infantry modifier of 2, and a cavalry modifier of 3. Mostly average to above average by Confederate standards. However, that morality rating of 6 must be the one reserved for philandering generals. [;)]

Treale -- If you look, you will see I snipped the description of Van Dorn's carreer from this site!

Bo -- Made me laugh (a lot!)... Thanks. [:)]

I thought that looked familiar [8|]

I haven't made much of a study of Van Dorn but based on Shelby Foote's description of him it would appear he did perform quite well as a cavalry commander and raider.  However, like a lot of Confederate generals, he had a problem with cooperating with others.

Mainly, I think his command rating seems a bit high. I see my opponent packing over 25,000 cavalry troopers in him, and taking out 60-70 supplies per turn per raid. And that is with Sheridan screening! Just seems a bit much for a guy who seemed to be merely 'passable' or 'not too bad' in real life.

By the same token, Forrest may be underrated for command. Now there's a guy who did a lot and who the Yanks actually feared/respected!

Is that with v1.020? I would suggest in any case trying to put fewer supplies/depots within his reach if possible.

Nobleone -> RE: Leader Overrated? (8/12/2008 2:58:53 AM)

That would be version 1.01, but why did you go and tell him to put those supplies out of my reach?[:)]  I need every wagon I can raid at this point.

Yes, we are currently running 1.01. I am holding off on the patch until my email game is over -- don't want to blow it away.

Main reason I need all those depots is that army leader will not get the "depot" activation bonus unless I build 5 depots. With "only" 4 depots, poor old Grant was having his lunch stolen right out from under him, and he would sit there pouting about it until the next month as a result. Mix and repeat month-by-month. As it was, Grant ended the '61 campaign adjacent to Corinth, but did not actually take it until late-'63. He activated twice in '62 -- to take Memphis - and then sat for almost a year while feeding half the Confederacy via Van Dorn's 'Legions' -- even with a fully-staffed Sheridan screening.

Good thing that Sherman had his Wheaties -- he was active almost every turn and tore through Tennessee and NW Georgia. Grant is still looking for his 4th star. Sherman may get drafted to run for president (whether he likes it or not) after the war.

There is no reason not to update. Erik and I are playing a game that we started under 1.01, and then upgraded to 1.02 after several turns. There haven't been any issues due to updating midgame that we have encountered.
