RedMike -> Commander's Edition - what is it ? (8/6/2008 3:18:06 AM)

Not intended to start another flame war, just want to know how Commander's Edition fits into things? What is it and why is it?

If you have H3 do you need or want CE?

In the past, that simple question would have gotten you banned from some sites... [:D]

You can take a look here to see how Harpoon developed:

A Brief History of Harpoon

Harpoon Classic Commanders' Edition (HCE) is simply a different way to simulate naval warfare. A good analogy might be squash and racquetball. They use the same courts, both have a racquet, both use a ball, both are played between individual opponents,... but they are different games and try to do things in different ways.

I have both versions and enjoy them equally. There are demo versions for older versions of Harpoon Classic available, but not specifically for HCE.

They won't show exactly the same thing as HCE, but they will give users an honest feel for the game.

Well herman, now I'm totally confused. Why are there 193 different versions of harpoon?? Why not just one continually enhanced version called...harpoon?

Anyway, I'm downloading CE to give it a try. I like ANW but I'm curious about CE.

RedMike...out

The "Original" computer Harpoon was the Harpoon Classic branch of the game. It generally evolved from 1989 as:

Harpoon (now called Classic) --> Harpoon 97 --> HC2002 --> HC Gold --> HCE

The other branch of Harpoon started in 1994 with:

Harpoon II --> Harpoon 2 Admiral's Edition --> Harpoon3 -- ANW

As to the "why" of having two different branches for computer Harpoon, I'm not too clear, either. However, I have been told that the two branches might somehow be"re-unified" when "The Next Harpoon" version is released.

Mmm hmmm. Thanks for that. OK I have HCE installed and I'm testing it out. Lot different from ANW version which I'm slowly getting back into. I like ANW and really look forward to it becoming a rock solid bug free piece of software. There's nothing else like it that I know of anyway.

I'm trying to get the HCE beta patch but it's timing out on me. I'll post over on the HCE forum and see if I can't get the patch. Thanks herman, I'll give you an ANW MP shout here before too long.

RedMike -> RE: Harpoon (8/7/2008 8:24:54 AM)

Well I'm by no means operating on a full head of steam regarding HCE but my first impression is I like ANW a whole lot better. The UI may not be the greatest but imo it beats HCE's UI. That's my preference anyway. I have to spend some time getting familiar with it.

It's excellent that you've taken the initiative to try both types of computer Harpoon.

It's good to see folks who may play one version, but are still able to respect others for their own preferences.
