Anthropoid -> What Are the Best Alternate History Scenarios?? (8/7/2008 3:02:58 PM)

m10Bob's new thread on the I-400 got me me thinking about alternate history scenarios.

What are the best Alternate History, or What-If scenarios for WiTP?

Links, commmentary, critique whatever, MUCH appreciated :)

Any RHS mod or Empires Ablaze seem to be what you want to look at ... I'm playing Empires Ablaze by Nemo at present and although the war is going pretty similarly so far, the new toys are cool! And the what to build as a Japanese player mouthwatering.

AAR's are your best bet, Nemo's in particular as the Mod designer, gives a good insight as do the 4+ other updated AAR's about EA (mine included). Scenario Design section also talks about these ...

Cool, thanks!

Guided by your suggestions, and playing with the Search function a bit (hey it really DOES work in advanced mode!) I found what I was looking for. Based on a quick read, I think RHSAIO: Level 7 sounds like the thing for me for now.

After AE comes out, I might have to try PBEM while other guys are still fairly unfamiliar with the new game, but for now I think playing the AI is plenty of fun :)

Playing as the Japanese, I find the industry forts very hard to capture. While lacking combat power on their own, they provide superb support to anything stacked with them.

You are playing that mod as the Japanese? I had the impression it was really intended to be played as the allies against an AI Japan?? The description says

This is the ONLY RHS scenario really suitable for AI to be used - and ONLY Japan really can be properly controlled by the AI.

We're playing RHSRAO, but the industry forts are similar.

And while it may say "more suited to AI play" than the other scenarios you've got to remember that play vs the AI isn't going to be challenging.

A single piece of paper is more suited to generating lift than a bowling bowl is but I wouldn't want to jump off the edge of a building just holding onto a piece of paper. Go for a PBEM-only scenario and PBEM it and I think you'll find things much more stimulating and challenging.

Thanks Nemo :)

It has taken me a long time to really feel like I understand this game enough to get into a PBEM. I don't want to get into one and not finish it. I've never done a WiTP nor a WPO PBEM. I've done 12 or so in other games (TOAWIII and Civ), including one Civ3-Conquests using a "The Cold War" mod that had 8 guys and lasted for over two years! It ended in a technical victory for our side, the allies.

I tend to think I'm fairly good at these things, and I really enjoy them but (a) sometimes the playing the critical turns can really soak up a lot of free time (which is a preferable way to spend it than a lot of other ways) and (b) sputtered PBEMs, or ones where opponents are just not a good personality match seem like an even worse waste of time.

Add to all these considerations that AE will (hopefully) be coming out soon enough, and I'm just a bit reluctant to get into a PBEM using WiTP at this stage.

Right now I'm slackin' like a pro, but it is summer. Granted I got work I need to get done, but I can afford a BIT of slackin'. Later in the semester that will not be the case, and I'll be lucky if I can find time to do a 1 turn every other day schedule. I've got some guys that want to redo a Civ4 "Next War" PBEM we played a year or so ago (in which me and another guy caused "the Earth's Crust to Crack! from firing too many nuclear missiles [:D] ), so I'm pretty well committed to doing that in the coming months.

In short, I don't feel like I can be truly deeply committed to a PBEM that I'd start with WiTP RHS right now. I'd be able to give it quite a bit of time over the next month but that would slack off and then when AE came out, who knows if either one of us would want to continue!

If any of you guys reading this feel similarly, and would like to get something going let me know. I'd even be willing to play Japan. I could afford to expend the learning curve points to figure out production over the next few weeks, which would be good long-term training for AE.

Besides some of the RHS scenarios, Alikchi's Iron Storm comes to mind.

It seems to need an old version of AB's map though, so installation could be tricky. Alikchi wrote this beautiful AAR about his Iron Storm PBEM: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=915557

Yeah I was gonna install Iron Storm quite some time ago. Alikichi sent me a note even. But it looked to complicated to get running.

I now got RHS installed. Looks like since I installed some kinda compilation .zip file, I got most all the scnearios and stuff for Level 7. If anybody wants to get one going and fiddle around with an RHS PBEM till AE comes out, and given the caveats I note above, let me know!

Iron Storm was great. I was sorry to see my game end. I am enjoying Nemo's mod at the moment. The Iron Storm mod automatically converts the CHS map back to what it needs...
