Just finished Missile Boats at Dawn using the latest PlayersDB. What a great scenario. Missiles flying everywhere.

Then you should try out one of the bigger scenarios.............. Then it is raining missiles!!![sm=Evil-210.gif]

Those Harpoon Classic authors really knew how to design a scenario, eh?

That's a re-make from a scenario made nearly 20 years hence.  Really glad that you enjoyed it.

So?  Post up your play-by-play AAR!

RedMike -> RE: Harpoon (8/11/2008 9:46:12 PM)

I wasn't taking notes and I **** canned the aa.log. I'm going to replay that one with nukes set as recommended and perhaps I will post it up then.

I like the smaller tactical scenarios. The big ones can be overwhelming.

Anyway the Israeli boats really did their stuff evading the incoming missiles. Edge of your seat stuff! I think I sank 9 Lybian ships including the chemical carrier with the target goods on board and managed to win but I was repremanded for firing on several neutral vessals and I lost 4 or 5 own ships to the enemy. All in all one of my favorite scenarios so far. Some missiles tracked incorrect targets wondering off and zapping neutrals. The med is very crowded. I'd like to try this one MP...herman?? Have to find some time.

I'm not sure how to handle subs. Give them a mission and hope for the best I guess.

Try this one: Difficult, challenging, and hard to win.
Released last weekend

Asian Clash - Prelude.

Best results when playing with H3.6.3, but also designed for use with ANW.

I'm going to disagree with you. In my book, if I kill a neutral, I 'lose' no matter how well I might fulfill the other conditions. [:)]

The scenario was deliberately designed that way. Lots of neutrals are included to prevent the player from laying back and firing long-ranged Harpoon shots. Most will find the right target, but the occasional one might kill a neutral or, **gasp** a Friendly! Sometimes, you just have to wait until your target is in the clear or else go in with the guns to be sure... [;)]

I'd be happy to give you a game whenever you find the time.

And as to managing subs: - Micromanage them!  The AI tends to creep them on all missions; in the hands of the AI they ar no better than floating minefields. Manually sprint-drift them, listen below and above the layer, do a rough Target-Motion Analysis (or at least get some cross bearings plotted and when you finally get close to escorted surface ships, SLOW down and become a hole in the water. Sub warfare is a great part of harpoon!

Yeah herman I agree. That's what makes that scen so fun. You have to be careful. You have to count your shots and identify your targets.

Subs, how can you micro-manage when the game takes them away when you start the clock ??

You are playing under the "Full Reality" check. Under that setting, once a sub dives, it is out of your control because it is no longer in communication with your command units.

Most players seem content to play the game under the "Auto-Datalinks" setting. This means that you maintain contact with all of your units all the time. These settings can be found under the Game Preferences tab of your configuration launcher.

You can also set it when you start a scenario. Under the Difficulties window, select Custom and then check the appropriate box.

RedMike -> RE: Harpoon (8/12/2008 5:10:19 AM)

Mmm. Ok thanks. I'll play around with the settings.

That's what I play under. I like to control the subs, too. Not as "realistic," but much more fun for me.

Can't you, in Full Reality, give the sub a waypoint and order it to come to periscope or surface, thus getting back into communication to get new orders? If so, one can have the sub going into and out of contact periodically during a scenario...

.

I never play Harpoon in that way [full reality], but I know that from time to time a sub rises [waypoints, or unassigned after forfilding first orders]. I always play with "Auto Datalinks" enabled. I hate it when I can't control ALL assests under my command.

Yes, that would be the way you could regain control of your sub from time to time. By setting it to come to periscope depth at a particular waypoint, it will re-establish communication with you. However, when you use the Plotted mission like that, the sub is pretty restricted.

For example, it will simply travel from one point to the next and come to periscope depth for its next set of instructions. It will not stray from its plotted path even if it detects something. If that contact comes within range of its weapons, it might fire, but it will not pursuit that contact.

Is it better, then to create an ASW mission and allocate the sub to that?

It all depends on how much control you desire. If you create an ASW mission and play with Full Reality enabled, that sub might never re-appear until the end of the game. When you use missions, you are handing control over to the AI. The unit might appear at periscope depth and you can grab control at that time, but it is just as likely to dive again and lose contact.

If you think that you can do a better job than the AI (and most players do), then just play with the AutoDatalink function enabled. You can still create ASW missions and assign your subs. However, with AutoDatalinks, you can go in and re-take control whenever you like.
