Unzen -> Do any subs have anti-air capabilities? (8/13/2008 9:17:16 AM)

..... or are they reliant on air cover from land bases and surface vessels?

Sorry for the n00bness of the question. [;)]

In HCE, certain flavours of Kilo class diesel-electrics are equipped with MANPADS (manportable SAMs) that they can launch while surfaced.

Mmmm. That sounds extremely risky to pull off and get away with it? Surely the Kilo's would be ASW fodder for the marauding helos? Definitely a latch-ditch defense, that one!

I would have thought sub-surface Sidewinders or even AMRAAMs would be a technical possibility? Clearly there's the issue of how a submerged sub could acquire a radar lock in the first place against the aircraft - but it 'could' be possible?

Google the 'SIAM' and 'IDAS' missile programs for more info on the prospects of sub launched air defense missiles and the continuing effort to make it a reality.
