A dude at work was telling me about this game and has gotten me a little excited about it. I'd like to try out a demo before I buy. Is there one?

There is no demo.

While there is no demo, most of the "plankowners" had purchased Uncommon Valor, which is also available by this game company and is less expensive.
If you do get UV, and find this is your cup of tea, you will then have the option of getting WITP and being familiar with the game mechanics, making it easier to learn WITP.
With either game, you will be in position to get into these forums and better understand (and appreciate) what is being said.
I have learned a lot on these threads, from a lot of good people.

Looking forward to seeing you here more often.[;)]

I'm going to go with your suggestion...I'm ordering UV right now.  I'm looking forward to it.

There is a free download of Pacific War - Matrix Edition, a simpler (every turn is two weeks as opposed to 1 day) version. It is available here http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/ scroll down to the bottom of the page.

He's probably trying to sell you his copy. ;)

Welcome,

Take a look at some of the AARs in this forum. While you will not see any of the mechanics, you will be able to see the level of excitment and tension that this game produces.

I think we would all acknowledge that a game of this size and complexity has imperfections. However, the richness of the game more than overwhelms the flaws, and the game has addicted many of us.

In addition, I need to tip my hat to Matrix and to the veterans in this forum. Matrix offers phenominal support to this game. The verterans in the forum are a fascinating set of guys who offer endless help for rookies and who constantly explore the intricacies of the game.

Feinder -> RE: Is there a demo? (8/17/2008 3:15:56 AM)

While I certainly very much enjoy this game (and did UV as well), I just think it should be said in fairness that, while UV is the basic engine for WitP, buying it is not necessary for WitP.  As in, I don't even know what the games cost right now, but if you buy UV (about $50 I think), and you like it; you have a stand-alone game in UV.  But if you want to play WitP, you will still have to pony up whatever they're charging for WitP now-a-days (it used to be about $75).  So just consider that, if price is an issue, if you really want to play WitP, just go ahead and buy WitP.

For either game, both are excellent products, and you will most certainly get many, MANY hours of enoyment from both.

Regards,

I appreciate all the responses fellas.

One more thing regarding this game. If you have WitP and you like it you can buy the highly anticipated Admirals Edition which is under development right now and requires a copy of WitP.
UV on the other hand is a stand alone game, so you should consider the price difference of UV and WitP versus the option to upgrade to AE. And of course WitP has the newer engine compared to UV.

Anthropoid -> RE: Is there a demo? (8/18/2008 4:15:04 PM)

One more thing: the game is probably the best strategy game ever. However, that lofty status comes with a price: Instead of a learning curve, WiTP has a learning CLIFF.

Learning how to use WiTP is NOT easy (and note, I have a Ph.D. in anthropology, so I'm not exactly a bone head). Now I'm not trained in military matters, so I did not have any real edge in knowing what a battalion is, or knowing what the difference b/w a P-38 and a P-39, etc, etc.. If you are a veteran, or just a WWII history buff, it might be more like  very-very steep learning curve instead of a cliff. But for me it was definitely a long haul to learn to play it. I would guess that all told it probably took me about 50 gaming/studying sessions averaging 2 or 3 hours each to get to the point that I felt like I understood the game, and was proficient playing. That and also learning the game mechanics with a slightly simplified version of WiTP that focuses on Pacific theatre in 1920s: War Plan Orange (also a Matrix title). Because of real life those 50 sessions were spread out over about 2 years, so it took awhile for me.

Be prepared for many hours of reading, asking lots of questions on here, note taking, organizing notes, using Excel files to keep things organized, reading supplementary materials (wiki whatever). But eventually it will click, and you'll have it.

Unfortunately at that point, you will quickly outmatch the AI (at least I did) and be needing a human opponent for a real challenge.

But even then, as a "proficient to good" player, there is still a long way to go to become a true master. Some of these guys on here are crazy good at this game.
