...is there an easy way to learn this game? I'm actually thoroughly confused as it stands.

I apologize ahead of time if there is a thread somewhere answering this question already.

I tried starting out with the tutorial campaign, but there doesn't seem to be any kind of "tutorial" going on.

there is a lot of useful info on these threads if you can sort through the banter to find it. An especially useful one from over a year ago deals with aircraft altitudes and settings. If I can come across it I will post a link here...... hopefully someone has it handy though.

Thanks borner.

Any help is appreciated.

I think you do need to print out the manual and read through it. There is a lot of important things in it you need to know to play the game well...

Air HQ’s will help air operations within their operational radius. Level bombers not located within an air HQ’s command radius will have their number of planes flying reduced by 25% for Offensive missions.

Ground Division HQ’s provide a +20% ground combat benefit and Army/Corps HQ’s provide a +10% ground combat benefit. Ground units in the same hex with the Division HQ they are directly attached to will be 20% more effective in ground combat. Japanese Army/Allied Corps HQ’s provide a 10% benefit to all ground units within 6 hexes.

Things like this you need to know. No substitute for reading the manual and reading the threads here on the forum either.

Read the manual, play some short scenarios against the AI set to "easy" and as you get the hang of things increase the difficulty in the AI setting.  Once you can beat the AI on hard try a PBEM and ask your opponent for pointers and comments.

You can also go to Spooky's website and check out the UV section with all of it's tips.  Here's a link to it.

Read the manual, it helps. Also, don't try and understand all of what is happening. There's a mass of information in the game and a lot of it is arcane (I'm looking at you land combat). Focus on getting the mechanics down.

Just to simplify thing I can recall just running one part of the battle - trying to take and hold Guadacanal was mine- and not dinking around with PNG and other areas so I could try and do something right rather than just getting overwhelmed.

Just be a real man. Get a PBEM going, senario 19. You'll figure things out soon enough. [:D]

I beg to differ with just jumping into PBEM.  You must know the basics before asking another player to devot so much time and effort.

I was hoping that the big [:D] was a clue that I was making a joke.

Just making sure that the joke wasn't going to be taken seriously.  [;)]

Since it's not an easy game, there is no easy way, but a good way is to review the FAQ:

... and then just play thru some short scenarios.
