I am a very new player of SPWAW and I'm trying to play the artillery tutorial. There is obviously a system for numbering the hexes but I can't find it in the manual which, although very large, leaves a lot to be desired in term of layout and clarity.
Can anyone please tell me how the hexes in SPWAW are numbered, or point me to the right section of the manual?

The hexes cannot be numbered.
But if you leave the mouse pointer over a given hex enough, a dialog box will pop up on the top of the map giving infos on the hex (terrain,etc) and the hex #, too.

David, I found that tutorial very frustrating until I figured out the numbering system. Hex 0,0 is top left corner. The number will appear in a dialog box if you hover your cursor above it. You can change the delay time of the appearance of the dialog box by going to the Preferences menu and change Live Delay to xxx. This should make the info appear faster

Thought I'd give a little more info on hex numbering in wargames for those new to the hobby. 99.9% of all wargames use some kind of grid coordinate system and the one SPWAW uses is very common although a bit different.

As Mojo has been said already, in SPWAW the top left corner is hex 0,0. This represents hex 0 of row 0. If you move one hex to the right you are at hex 1 or row 0 or 1,0. Move another hex to the right and you are at 2,0 or hex two, row 0. Now go back to hex 0,0. Move down one hex and you will be at 0,1 or hex 0, row 1. Move down another hex and you are at hex 0 of row 2 or 0,2. So if you are at hex 24,32 then you are in hex 24 of row 32. See how it works?

Other wargames usually refer to columns and rows depending on the orientation of the hex grid. For instance hex number 0101 would be column 1 row 1. 12,24 would be column 12, row 24. And still other games may use letters and numbers like A12 for instance. This would be column A row 12. For maps with more than 26 columns, then after column Z you would next use AA, then BB etc.

This is probably more than you ever wanted to know about hex numbering but I hope it will help and if you get other wargames you should have no touble figuring out the hex grid system.

Sorry for some of the typing mistakes in my above examples. A while back I spilt coffee on my keyboard and even though I cleaned it, it still transposes letters on me if I'm not careful. Guess I shouldn't be so lazy and go out and buy a new keyboard.
