SBD's from the Big E attacked small jap TF in the Slot. One Cruiser takes 5 hits with 1000lb bombs and sails away.
What do they make them out of, umatainium ? [:@]

if you referr to stock, then Allied 1000lb GP bombs can´t even penetrate IJN CA armor... [8|]

Expected number of 1000 lb AP hits to sink a Japanese Class A heavy cruiser was about 5.

The CA may also go a short distance and sink instead of really escaping.  I'm still trying to figure out how the dive bombers with their 1000 lb AP bombs can't penetrate Taiho's flight deck, yet after she's sunk the weapon that gets the credit are the bombs and not the 8 torpedoes that hit her...

I guess I will have to get me some of them armor piercing bombs. Did they even have them on carriers?

Sure they did, but only your more experienced DB squadrons will carry them and the Dauntless can only carry them on missions they would be able to carry a 1000 lb bomb on.  The Helldiver will be able to carry them at any range but their experience level still comes into play, plus a random number generator.

I've seen numerous times my DB squadrons hit CA's and BB's with GP bombs, and hit the tankers and AP's with 1000 lb AP bombs.  I'm starting to think that in their target briefings they hear "target is a TF of AP's" and think "oh, we need those special AP bombs for them"...

You are probably right. AP bombs for a AP-ship. LOL
Maybe we need some BB bombs and CA bombs. Next time we replenish I will ask for them.

Uhh wth? Are you sure? i know 500lb's don't dent them but 1000lb's do penetrate them from my memory.

Yep! I counted them 5 hits with 1000 lb bombs (don’t know if they were GP or not)
But the cruiser didn’t sink. The battle report said it was hit 5 times damage was critical and that she was on fire. Next time maybe I will have better luck with torpedoes.

From my limited experience, the weapon credit goes to the last hit, not the decisive hit. It could be .30 machine-gun rounds if the last hit ws made by a straffing old fighter (even a Buffalo or Wirrawway), AFAIK. This might be misleading...

This is where looking at the animation is helpful : you know which weapons penetrated the armor, not a raw and simplified number of hits of only looking at the after-action report.

oh, you could be right, you probably are right! Long time I haven´t played stock, it´s the 500lb that doesn´t penetrate, the 1000 lb does!

I slowed the animation so I can scrutinize it better.
I’m not unhappy that the cruiser didn’t sink because when they were bombing the hell out of my troop transports and didn’t sink any of them I was happy as a pig in s---.
In the long run I guess it all works. “Alls fair in love and war”.
