Ok, you are all in luck. I have convinced the powers that be that it would be a good idea to expose a little bit of what is going on in AE. This is a Benchmarking Test that aims to check the performance of the A2A routines in a HISTORIC setting. ------------------------------------------- DISCLAIMER: This is meant to give everyone a bit on insight. A preview, if you will, of what is going on behind the curtain. WE ARE IN BETA. Whatever dynamics, trends, paradigms you detect or disagree with are subject to change. Let's not ruin this for everyone. This is not intended to foster debate or support anyone's agenda. Mostly just enjoy and take the time to learn about what is in store with AE. ------------------------------------------- I am using the Coral Sea Scenario as a base, but intend to test the Lae Wing vs. 75 & 76 Sqdns of the RAAF. I have added the 8th PG (P-39s and P-400s) to the scenario as a potential relief. I am running several turns to allow FAT, MOR, and A/C Availability rates adjust for normal Ops, rather than testing one turn at a time in a vacuum. This is as real as it gets. This is an historical scenario and I am running “Dirty” with all the extras that the Scenario provides, including CARDIV 5 IVO Truk and Lady Lex and Yorktown IVO New Hebrides. I set 75 & 76 Sqdn up per what I consider to be typical for them at this time (May 42) ~ 60-65 EXP & ~ 60-70 MOR. But obviously something went awry since 76 Sqdn is at 39 EXP! No matter, it will be a good comparison. Let's see what happens. I’ve also staged the 8th PG at Townsville as a relief should the Aussies become exhausted, as they did IRL. Replacement rates for Aircraft look fine, and I should be able to sustain this test for at least a week or two. Initially only 4 Kittys and 1 CAC are up they are repeatedly reinforced in 2s and 3s. The combat wasn’t as one sided as it appears. The Kittyhawks are at two different altitudes, but I think they suffered from a piecemeal defense against a numerically superior foe. I am surprised that 76 Sqdn fared better than 75 Sqdn, but they were on high cover.Combat lasted longer than I expected... These guys were attempting to escort the CACs I had on ground attack to Buna...I wanted the Wirraways out of the way...oh well next time. I think the Lae Wing steals one here as they are 90+ EXP and are probably facing 76 Sqdn @ 39 EXP. No radar is present, but they also have a 3k' Altitude advantage over the Sweep. I did not want to conduct Offensive ops out the gate, but what can I say. I still learned somethign from this. Day 2 of the Test. 2 May 1942. Weather looked to be a challenge. Fortunately for the IJ it didn't seem to adversely affect coordination checks. All missions went as planned. Unfortunately the Aussies put up a concentrated defense. Tainan Ku K-1 from Lae was particularly hard hit with 2 Zeroes going down in their Sweep. One of which being piloted by Saburo Sakai (99 EXP, 1 Kill, 3rd mission). Not a man easily replaced. relevant messages: Escort of 16 x A6M2-21 Zero from Tainan Ku S-1 unable to locate raid proceeding onto target Port Moresby This just means that they swept ahead of the Main Strike from Rabaul. AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/02/42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Morning Air attack on Port Moresby , at 98,130 Initially only 3 Kittys are on CAP, however they get the drop on the Lae boys by being 5-6k's higher than yesterday, and were rapidly reinforced to a peak of 40 A/C over the course of the battle. The SCR-270 is really making an impact! The first kill was a Zeke, but the Lae Boys recover quickly. Nearly a 1:1 effort today for the Aussies, and several Zekes were left trailing smoke as they left the area. The battle was prolonged, and ebbed and flowed nicely, even reaching 0 CAP for a moment until a two-ship arrived to keep it going. Not a victory per se, but certainly an improvement over 10 downed A/C yesterday owing to miscoordination and unintended offensive ops. If Ogawa doesn't get it done he's out... RAAF at Port Moresby RAAF is in a bad way. I've had to move elements of the 8th PG into PM MUCH earlier than anticipated. I blame myself. That ill-fated attempt at getting the CACs out of the way yesterday cost us...however there is a silver lining. Even though as the sun set there were only 5 ready crates for tomorrow I am confident the boys will get the comers up and ready by dawn. Now that we've figured the Nips out we have a shot. Maybe your bombing would improve if you fly some recon missions over PM? Please show the starting number of aircraft for each day then the ending number for each day! Is there a chance of fail aircraft repair and plane is scraped, other wise I don't see aircraft maintenance doing much to model planes scraped for parts. Would like to see some random delay on air replacements (1-4) days, no Air HQ -2 day. Maybe aircraft maintenance should also be effected by Air HQ, no HQ fewer parts, slower repair.

Many thanks for this and cant wait for the rest If ive understood this correctly the CAP increases as combat goes on, does this depend on the number of a/c on CAP and LRCAP missions? If this is so, then its brilliant. Adds more realism to the game. Also loving the new messages and the fact that units tha do not locate traget have the common sense to engage secondary targets. Day 3. A DAY OF RECOVERY No land based Air flies. PM missions were cancelled due to weather, but all was not lost. The Lex and Yorktown launched strikes on the uncovered AMPHIBGRU heading toward Moresy, and gave them hell. That's all good cuz Air ops in WWII ran in fits and spurts. On the allied side it gave my Aussies an extra day's reprieve from Attack, not that the 4th Ku or Genzan Ku have been worth a damn, but the Zekes have taken their toll on them. I will run more recon, but this scenario is not equipped with dedicated Recon, but I can bring a Det of 9 Nells down. Unfortuantely they are not trained in Recon… The weather day also gives the 36th PS an extra day to get their Cobras in fighting shape for what will be a big day tomorrow... This is a great opportunity to see how Air Units recover after two solid days of Combat at the front. The x in front of the merchant ship designation was put there to distinguish between a civilian ship with civilian crew and a military ship directly run by the military, which are the AKs and APs. There are some differences in characteristics of the different ship types. Among them, military run ships are better for invasions than civilian ships and they will unload faster over the beach. I am running this H2H, but at first did not pay much attention to the Naval Components, since my objective was testing A2A around PM. Since I began the test though, the CV TFs have moved in the general direction of each other per the Scenario 1st move settings. I have since begun prepping for the battle of Coral Sea, which you will see in time.

DAY 4 Lots of action. This will be in multiple posts. Two night surface engagments kick things off. I was not expecting this as I was not playing the SFC TFs actively. I was leaving the CAs Chicago, Ausrtralia, and CL Hobart stand guard at PM, but they reacted to the impending invasion force. First the hit the small screen (I think) made up of CL Tenryu, 2 x DDs, and 2 x small Aux vessels. Unfortunately an otherwise brilliant crossing of the T by Crace was marred right off the bat by a 53cm Torpedo in Australias side. This coming from Tenryu at the head of the line. After that in short order, the ABDA dispatched Mutsuki, Yayoi, and the AMc Fumi Maru #2. Yeah actually would not be a bad idea to display the last few messages during ship to ship combat so it won'T take forewere to resolve a turn but still one would not miss important info - but I realize it might be too late already. Thanks for sharing this AAR, though! Good news that you are in BETA already!!!
