MartNick -> A Question for scenario developers (9/20/2008 8:40:23 AM)

Now that v1.04 is with us will the scenario developers be tweaking any aspects of their existing work, to take in the new units/functions available? I'm looking to start playing some of the larger scenario games and wondered if I should wait before going ahead [:)]

Have to say thanks to all the guys/girls who have given us new scenarios over the years to help keep this great series alive [:)]

Huib -> RE: A Question for scenario developers (9/20/2008 11:43:43 AM)

As for Westfront:

With the 1.03 changes came some scenarios with new features. For example engineer trucks and crewed boats to simulate the Waal river crossing in WF "A Pivotal Day for the 82nd" (That is a H2H scn).

Bridging engineers where added to "CCR/7 into the Breach" (also a H2H scn)

The "Fall Braun" scenario has some ferries in it. (also H2H scn)

With 1.04 came the correct OOB of the entire Dutch 1940 Army. I put that info and some extra historical changes into the Dutch Verdun scenario.
With 1.04 it was possible to give the 1940 SS Verfügungstruppe their camo uniforms. I integrated that in the Dutch 1940 scenarios as well.

I would like to jam in with a praise to anybody whose ever made a map and shared it.
I have so many maps I play on (almost all downloaded somewhere, few selfmade) that gave me so much gameplay and fun, I owe you all a lot.
Specially those bigger maps must be a hell of a work.
Some of them are (borisov,chernachov,brody,kotelnikovo,kurlovo,halbe,novosokolniki)

Hello MartNick (and others),

For the moment being, I do not intend to 'upgrade' my previous launched large scenario's ('Market-Garden', 'Operation Overlord', 'Hollow Victory II' and 'Fortress Holand'). Instead of that, I am working on new scenario's in wich many of the new features of the 1.03 and 1.04 patches are incorporated.

My main project at the moment are two huge scenario's about the German invasion of the Netherlands in May 1940. The one scenario will be in the Centre-West part of the country (mapsize about 860 x 500, running from Texel in the NW corner to Weert in the SE.). It will depict the battle for Fortress Holland (German airlandings at Den Haag, Rotterdam and Dordrecht/Moerdijk), the advance of German forces through the provice of Noord-Brabant and (possible) French attempts to stop them, the battle for the Grebbe-line as well as the fighting for the Afsluitdijk ( Wonsstelling and Kornwerderzand).

The other scenario will be in the Centre-East part of the country (mapsize about 600x500, running from Amsterdam to Almelo(west-east) and Zwolle - Maasbracht (north-south)). It will be focussed on the IJssel and Maas linie (including difficult rivercrossings with (armoured) trains), on the battles for the Peel-Raam Stelling and the battle for the Grebbe line (again)

So, I was very interested in the prenounced 'Major update' of the Dutch OOB for the 1.04 patch. I must admit, the rsult is somewhat dissappointing! To say it kindly, the OOB seems not to have been finished yet! It is appearently based upon the excellent overview of Rogier Peeters, but it is (still) full of errors and mistakes. (For example in the present OOB, the Regiment Grenadiers is composed of just artillery, as is the Regiment Jagers, the Companies that Guarding some airfields, as Gilze Rijen, etc. etc.) Most of the Depot Troops (e.g. Leiden, Den Haag) that played such a significant role in beating the german airlanding troops in that area, are completely missing. I can continue but I won't. Is it all 'wrong' then? NO! I do like the feature that also 'regular' infantry is able to take the bike (and not just bicycle infantry). I do like the light machine guns for infantry units. And , of course, we have now Dutch ferries, and a Carden Lloyd armoured car! (Both were not a major problem; just choose allied 'equivalents', such as landing crafts and carriers respectively). Establishing an appropriate OOB is quite a hell of a job. The intensions of the present one in the 1.04 patch are very good; everybody has to tailormade them anyway in order to meet their own needs. I just want to say that the present one was presented to soon. But what.... everybody was in a hurry to launche the new patch. 'Patience' is a word that more and more seems to be skipped from dictionairies!!

So, at the end, I still had to create a total new OOB for the whole Dutch Army, an OOB that fits within the scope of my present (pardon: future, well, near future, I hope) scenario's. For example, it is less useful to have just full platoons to defend the IJssel - and Maas lines; you have to splitt them into smaller units. (I was already working on that; now I took many good and correct items of the newest patch into account)

I just have found out that Bridge engineers are able to repair previously destroyed bridges (I was not sure about that), although the 'red circle' around them remains. I also have found that crewed boats are just able to (dis)embark their passengers on shallow water hexes, (is that correct Huib?), and that Arm'd trains can use medium bridges (fortunately, but somewhat strange since heavy tanks (comparable in weight wit arm'd trains ??) can only pass heavy bridges.)

So, my friend, if you want to play large scenario's in which the newest features are included, you still have to wait a little longer. It can be weeks, it can be months, but the scenario's will be released most probably this year.

By the way, are you interested to get a kind of Beta release for play testing? Please let me know and I will send you as soon it is ready.

Regards,

Hajo Baltjes

Hajo,

I think you are right about the crewed boats. You need shallow water (or swamp) to (dis)embark. Jason is always very kind when it comes to adding extra historical units, so if there is still something missing in the Dutch oob I'm sure he will add it for the next update. At least you now have Schwarzlose and Vickers heavy machine guns and the infantry units have more historical values.
Oh well the M38 sounds like a jet; we overlooked that...
We also added some more Dutch aircraft types.

Oh yes. Heavy tanks can pass medium bridges probably since 1.03.

MartNick -> RE: A Question for scenario developers (9/21/2008 11:07:21 AM)

Hajo

Great news about the new scenarios, if you have anything that needs playtesting I would be more than happy to try them for you.

Do you still have my email? If not PM me.

In the meantime I think I will restart a BIG scenario.

Many thanks

Martin

It's a start, a rather significant improvement over the Talonsoft Dutch OOB's. Are the 100% finished? No, of course not. Just as the huge German, Russian and American OOB's have been hugely updated, but are far from complete.

If there are more accurate OOB's and/or TO&E's that you can offer in assistance, I would be more than happy to include them.

If you need additional units, let me know, and I can try to include them.

I absolutely do not want to offend anyone, just curious - why so much interest in Dutch OOB? It's not that the Dutch army has seen many battles...

Maybe not many battles, but some of the battles were extremely interesting.

There are many countries in the Campaign Series, and eventually, they will all be expanded.

Jason,

Please send me your e-mail adress, and I am quite willing to send you the Dutch OOB as soon as it has been 'finished'. (Although, as someone remarked, it will never be 100% complete). I still have to do some finishing touch (for example to find out at what spots civil ferries have to be used).

greetings,

hajo baltjes
